I guess one of the most common debates on this forum is the definitions of different knife types.
What is a Survival knife ? What is a Bushcraft knife ? What is a camp knife ?
There are no definitive answers to these questions but I think there are some guidelines to help define a knifes purpose, albeit there will always be some crossover.
Anyway last night I was reading the July/August edition of Backwoodsman mag and came across the article ' So what is a survival knife ' by Dan Shectman, I always enjoy Dan's articles and what he has to say often makes good sense.
He basically says a survival knife should be able to Chop ( although it's never gonna match an axe ), split and batton. It should be able to carve Fuzz sticks and trap triggers etc, although will never match a Bushcraft knife. It should be able to dress game both large and small and carry out food prep but will never match a thin butchers blade. So it has to be a jack of all trades, master of none and most importantly of all it should be strong enough never to fail ya !!!
In the article Dan tested 3 knives, one from Scott Gossman, one from Bob Dozier and one from Treeman knives. Two of the three had 5-5 1/2" blades, this happens to be the exact same size as my Mark Wohlwend Booshway.
I blow hot and cold with knives pretty regularly but the Booshway has always remained at the top of my collection, the more I use it the more I love it and I'm sure if Dan Shectman had one in his collection it would have been in his article along with the other three !
My beloved Booshway~
