I had nenver heard of this food before recently. So i thought i would share it in case i'm not alone.

This stuff is awesome, its light in weight. You cook it like rice, and you carry it in much theh same way, the difference in the nutrition.

70% simple carbs (the best ones for you)
15% plant based fat (the best for you)
15% plant based proteins (the best ones for you)

Pound for pound i don't think it can be bested, this is what i will be packing from now on as a staple food.

Quinoa is the only grain which contains all nine essential amino acids. It's good stuff.

I have heard of it from health/ diet people, but never thought of it as a camp food.

I am going to have to pick some up

Thanks

I cook mine like pan fried rice, a bit of water to cover, a little chicken bullion cube, a little curry paste, and a tad of olive oil. simmer until the loops show and the grain expands.

The thought just kind of came to me today, its higly nutritious, its easy to cook, light to carry, why didn't someone tell me about this stuff when i was a boyscout?

I get mine at "Trader Joe's" here in california, but i think the typical place would be a whole foods market or the internet of course.

EDIT: i might have mentioned something of note. ORGANIC or un-processed quinoa is not the same as processed for sale grain quinoa. and for the topic of outback food, or camping food one is very bad and the other great.

ORGANIC UNPROCESSED quinoa needs to be soaked first, which wastes precious water. The result of not rinsing quinoa is a slight diarrheal effect. which basically screws you out of water either way.

Buying ready to cook processed quinoa is what i was talking about above. depending on how you eat at home or what you believe to be viable food sources, would determine which you purchased were water use not an issue.

Thanks. I was going to go to the market tomorrow, but all I have seen is organic unprocessed. I will have to check it out further.

Here is a googled image to spice the thread up:

Thanks for the info an the Quinoa, I'm going to got pick some up from Trader Joes. I also wish I would of known about this a long time ago. I'm in Trader Joes all the time and never remember even hearing about, or seeing it before.

My wife and I recently had dinner with some friends and they had made an amazing Quinoa dish with slices of summer squash and cranberries... I had to take home a container with the leftovers. I had never even heard of the grain before, but couldn't get enough of this dish. Costco also carries Quinoa. Enjoy!
