I am going to a wilderness medicine conference next month in Canada (brrr. cold even in August). I usually wear an old pair of BDU's in the "wilds" but they are now a bit "tight"...

What's your favorite pair of wilderness pants. Went to an overpriced camping store today and saw some $75+ pairs of mountain hardwear, north face etc and wonder if they are worth it???

Suggestions?????

I recently attended a trade show and ran across a product called Arborwear. Check out www.arborwear.com. They are clothes made for Tree climbers and the pants and shorts are made of heavy duty canvas, not denim. I think that I'm going to check them out in the near future.

you might want to look at German army surplus wool pants. They are really thick, really warm, and you can usually pick them up in good condition for around $20.

I was issued Royal Robbins 5.11. They are great and available reasonably on the net. I got extras from BOTACH (I know, but they have been great for me) for $35ish.

hi Bandaidman,
they're not very glamorous, but a pair of Dickies work pants are more durable and dry quicker than all cotton. The're also cheap.
Otherwise the hi-tech stuff works really well anywhere except near campfires.

I agree with the Dickies for cheap and very serviceable. For nasty brush (especially with thorns) I have some Filson Double Tin Cloth pants. They'll resist any thorns and my friends jokingly suggest they'll stop 22 rounds.

I love my Dickies, and they have the extra benefit of a "cell phone" pocket, which is the perfect size for carrying a medium to large folder! :p
