I would appreciate suggestions for lightweight pot for cooking and/or boiling water in outdoor situations.

Material, size, features and source all would be appreciated.

campmor has a good variety of liteweight kettles and cooksets. The link shows the titanium MSR titan kettle.

I use a canteen cup with my hiking and mobile BOB gear, which is inexpensive, liteweight and easy to stow. Especially if you use a military style canteen and cover. They hold a pint and can be had at most surplus stores like "cheaper than dirt" or "majors surplus".

I have to strongly second the ordinary canteen cup, stove sleeve, and US army canteen cover. This combination handles cooking, boiling water, collecting water, and water purification. The pouch on the cover holds two bottles of Potable Aqua and a mini-bic lighter. I regard this piece of gear as essential and in all my travels I haven't found a better more compact way to cover these basics. Mac

One of the things that makes titanium so useful in high-performance aircraft is that is is a very poor conductor of heat -- sort of an anti-aluminum or anti-copper. Its no lighter than aluminum -- but at least it dents easily and costs a fortune.

I love the canteen/canteen cup setup. Stainless steel is certainly durable, and, while it's heavier than aluminum, you won't have much chance of burning the bottom out if you doze off whilst it's on the fire.

One of the best deals now other than the cantee & C. Cup set is the G.S.I.
double boiler. It has a 1.25 qt pot with a 1 pt. cup/simmer pan that fits on the top of the pot as a lid. Using it this way you can cook in the small pot then cook in the large pot using the small simmer pot as a lid. This set also has a seperate lid that will fit both pots. Cost is about $25.00
Or for about $8-10.00 you can purchase a simple 1.5 qt. billy can from most any source. These billy's are about 5.5-6in wide and 8 in. tall.
Or just use a 13oz. coffee can. Put a long coat hanger bail on it and you will have a very handy item.

I have used both aluminum and SS mess kits, and like them both and they both work well. I do like the Aluminum better, I think it is lighter but sometimes a Bitc* to clean . I think it cooks better and doesn't get that hot to the touch.

For a while now, I've used the old coffee can with coat hanger assembly. Cheap, light, and easy to replace. There is an improved version of this at

I've even rock boiled in mine. Had to replace it last year as a fishing buddy mistook it for a spitoon :barf:

Campmor sells a nice stainless steel "OilCamp Cup" this cup fits perfertly over a 32 oz Nalgene water bottle. The cup sells for $5.99. I usually carry to water bottles in the mesh pockets of my mountainsmith butt pack, and with the way it fits over the end of a round bottle, it has completely eliminates the wasted space of packing a traditional cup.

Here is the link:
