Outdoor Edge Paragee or Camillus CUDA EDC?

Ok, they're both designed by Darrel Ralph and are generally similar in dimensions, design, function and intended use. The main differences I can see are the manufacturers and the offered blade steel -- the Paragee in AUS 8A and the EDC in either 420HC, 154 CM, D2 or Talonite. No one in my area has either knife in stock.

Blade material aside, which of these two knives is the better? Are they that much similar that it really doesn't matter? I suppose my question relates from simple quality of construction, sturdiness, fit and finish, and manufacturer reliability. I've heard Camillus has a good temper/heat treat, but I know nothing about Outdoor Edge.

This has probably been discussed before, but since I presently can't search the archives, I don't know for sure.

Thanks for your input.

Outdoor Edge is a good brand. They make excellent knives and have good service. The Paragee is discontinued and prices are excellent on the knife. I prefer it to the EDC.

Better point, handle fits more hands and grips, better price. The paragee was Darrell's idea of the best knife at that time.

The EDC was designed later by committee with lots of input. But like most committee offerings, it's a lesser design. I think Darrell knew best the first time.

had an EDC didn't like it much, the quality is good but the handle is too small and i don't like tip down carry, the blade was also very off center, my friends is also very off center, to the point of rubbing against the handle, and the steel handle look very cheap imo

I have both and think the Paragee is the better design by far.
However, the EDC has a slightly better build...my opinion.
I find the EDC difficult to use but it's thumb studs are easier to open with than the Paragee's.
The EDC is no longer made in 420HC. I see very little difference between 154 CM and AUS 8A in performance. Both are good steels.

Thanks for the comments. Eventually I'll probably end up owning both a Paragee and an EDC in 154 CM. Maybe I was just wanting to know which to buy first ;) I'm a compulsive buyer and collector it seems, although I do carry and use at least one knife on a daily basis -- usually two.

After reading the messages that have been posted so far, I realized that neither knife was as large as I had thought. Thanks to a handy-dandy measuring tape and a few of my smaller knives, I figured it out for myself.

Any additional comments about either or both knives are welcome. Thanks again.

I remember when they both were introduced, I made a similar comment - that they were very much the same design. None other than DDR himself cam on the board to point out how very different (?) they are.

just forewarning you...

Remember that expresssion"like splitting hairs"? Well you can't go wrong with either one. I looked at the paragee,EDC & Kershaw vapor. They all are nice .

Esav Benyamin -- Thanks for the link to the thread. Sheesh... yet another I'm probably going to have to buy :D The FL2 looks to be the size I had in mind and it's less expensive than the either Paragee or EDC.

RH -- LOL... Your comment reminds me of my dad's woodworking. When he finishes something it always looks great to me, but Dad always points out flaws to his design and craftsmanship  Do you remember what DDR thought were the big differences in the two knives? To him, they probably are very different knives.

Again, thank you to all who have commented.

I have both and boh are in my rotation. I will say that at these are two very different knives. They are both DDR designed framelocks of similar size and construction, but...

The recurve is much more pronounced on the EDC.
The Paragee has a more defined point.
The handle on the paragee also is shaped and feels remarkably different.

I like the handle feel better on the EDC but like the blade shape of the paragee better.

As to which I like better, depends on what day it is. The Paragee is very well built. I would put it above anything made be Coulmbia River. I can't for the life of me figure out why it wasn't more popular. I would say that Camillus coming out with the EDC at about the same time didn't help. Camillus has a bigger name, makes great stuff, and knows how to market its product better.

Right now you can get the Paragee at an amazing price. You'll probably end up with both, but I would get the Paragee first since they have been discontinued.

Can you guys let me know where the paragee is being sold now for a "great price". Time to stock up.

timdennis - It appears that 1SKS doesn't carry the Outdoor Edge line (I tend to check there first since they are the forum host) so checking elsewhere, the lowest price I've seen for the Paragee is $39.95 at knifecenter.com. Anyone else know of a better price?

shootist16 - Thanks for your thoughts. Since both knives were a little smaller than what I was presently looking for, I put this issue on the back burner (at least for now -- I'm certain both will be in my collection sooner or later). Instead of either, I bought the Outdoor Edge Magna which was about the size I had in mind. The opinions posted in the Outdoor Edge forum, particularly yours, pointed me in that direction. Thanks...so far the Magna appears to have been a steal at $49.95.

I do not have any experience with Camillus stuff but it is absolutely nothing wrong with Outdoor Edge Paragee and Magna. Both are very well designed pieces and their execution quality is more than adequate for their price. They display great value and it is sad that manufacturer seems to be a great sleeper with so good designs and quality.

A lot of places carry some Outdoor Edge folders but not the Paragee. Discount knives does not. Knifeoutlet.com has them for the same price as the Knifecenter and Outdoor Edge's own site-$39.95. So that appears to be the magic price for now.
