I've been talking to my friend who lives out in the country on a farm and is getting into knives. His birthday is coming up and I want to get him a awesome knife. I would like the blade length to be about 4-6 inches, seems to be a nice size. I need it to be a stainless steel so he has no worry about rust, the knife needs to be tougher than nails so has to be full tang. The knife will be use for hard farm use, hunting, and maybe a little bushcraft. I would like to keep it around the 100-150$ price range. I would prefer it to be made in USA, what would you recommend, also I don't to get anything a quarter inch thick. Either 3/16 or less to keep the weight down. Thanks for any help.

Benchmade 162 Bushcrafter - Full Tang S30V Steel - High Ground Drop-Point Blade - Buckskin Leather Sheath

Kabar Becker BK16 (about $70). If you want a very tough knife, Becker BK-2 or the larger BK-7. An alternative would be ESEE 4. All very good production knives. Not fancy, but very practical.

I agree with those knives for hard use and possible bushcraft. However i dont think those fit into the ss category he was wanting.

S30V is great steel. I love it on any folders. However i tend not to lean towards it if I'm lookin at fixed blades for hard use. But again, thats just me.

The Ka-Bar Becker knives are some of the best survival/bushcraft/camping knives for the money you can get your hands on right now. I would check them out.

If you are set on a stainless steel then I would look at Fallkniven knives. They use VG-10 on most I beleive. Great knives but they will be pushing the upper limits of your price range, also not US made.

The Benchmade Bushcrafter looks to fit everything you are looking for but I don't know much and haven't heard much about that knife. I agree with alude that for a knife you know you are going to be working hard I would tend to favor 1095 vs S30v.

Great advice above. Just a quick point - high quality manufacture doesn't always equate to "USA made". You can find any number of excellent quality knives produced in overseas locations from Scandinavia to Cambodia. It's all about manufacturing standards and quality control. USA made seems to be a fairly safe way of getting quality - but don't overlook your high quality overseas options :) For your price range you should be able to get something pretty respectable. Also have a look at some of the custom knives on offer here; there are some amazing quality knives at very reasonable prices.

stainless ESEE 4 will be out soon -- several online knife shops are compiling pre-order lists.

Oh yeah i forgot about those. I got to handle them at the blade show. They were sweet. I asked how much they were going to be and one of the reps told me they didnt have a price atm.

I have an f1 and love it, it's a great knife. I also have a swamp rat rmd on the way and have a feeling it's going to be a great knife. I would check out both and see what one looks more suited for you. A scrapyard 411 might be another one to look at. They are carbon steel but are coated but he would have to take care of it from time to time. Also, I don't know how skilled he is with sharpening so the convex f1 may be a bit more difficult. (I'm terrible and it's really hard to get right for me)

If I were to go non stainless my choice of steel would be 3V.The Bushcrafter costs around $125 and fits his requirements.Good luck with your search...

I know, I just don't want no made in china crap.

Entrek Javalina would be a good choice. Just over a 4 inch blade, 440C steel (Ray does 440C the way it should be done), and 100% USA made.

Entreks would be a great choice, comes with a great warranty as well.

I would make sure and find one of the new ones with the satin finish over the beadblast finish option.

The only problem I have with the F1 is that the edge will chip very easily other than that its about a perfect outdoors knife. If they used something other than VG10 for the core I would likely still own my F1 it really is that good I just hate edges that chip easy.

Muela Rhino Micarta, been looking at it myself. The Sandvik steel is a great stainless steel
