Hello, I am new to knives, so I need a lot of help. I am looking for a single blade knife, around 2 3/4 inches long that is good for outdoor and camping use. I also do not want to spend more than around $45. I was thinking about the Spyderco Persistence, but I really have no idea. Any suggestions?

I think your question should eventually be better asked in "General Knife Discussion". Unless you are looking for a multitool or anything like that.

In your price range the Victorinox Trailmaster seems to be a good decision in any way - for coming back to the topic of this subforum :)

Are you set on a folder? I think a small fixed blade would be better for outdoor/camping use, and you can get an ESEE Izula for $45 if you shop around. The BK11 and BK14 are good too but slightly larger. If you want a folder, take a look at the ESEE Zancudo. The Kershaw Skyline is a good one too, but is a tad over 3".

For the ESEE Izula, Is it worth it to spend the $15 extra to get the handle?

No! IMHO, the factory handles are not useful, nor is the choice of canvas a worthwhile investment. Save your pennies and get the TKC G10 scales in any of the color choices.

Orange with tan blade is my preferred combo...

I notice that these handles cost $35-50. I will not spend more than $60 for handle and knife combined. Do you have any other suggestions, and do you think the Izula is the best knife for my needs?

This thread should be moved to the Outdoor Equipment sub-forum. Or you should repost it there, as you'll get a lot more outdoor and camping input there, I think.

There are a lot of different ways to do this depending on your preference, where you camp and how you camp.

If you press hard into ultra-light techniques, you can get by with something as small as a Leatherman PS4 Squirt.

I like to have a knife for food prep and the ability to make wood shavings. I carry an Opinel #9. You can get both for well under your price limit.

If you prefer to have a fixed blade with you, replace the Opinel with a Mora like the Companion HD.

Hope this helps.

I actually really like the $15 micarta scales. The TKC G10 scales are nicer, but the micarta ones are still worth the money imho. I have Izulas with both and I alternate between them. Another option is the BK14 that has plastic scales available that fill the hand better.

BK14 is a great small fixed blade. There's also the BK24 in D2 steel I believe? Same knife but in D2. I have the zytel or whatever scales by K-bar and they're a major improvement over the skeleton handle it comes with.

Ah I remember the days when I was unwilling to spend a lot on a knife. If I were you, I would get something a little more expensive and higher quality, that is, unless you can't afford it.

If you are looking for an inexpensive and decent fixed blade, I'd recommend to take a look at Mora Bushcraft series(it might be a little longer than 2 3/4 in, but definitely good price/performance ratio)

For folding knife, since we are in multitool forum, I'd strongly recommend a Victorinox Plain-edged 111mm Trekker(OHO blade, wood saw, can and bottle opener, screwdrivers, awl, everything relevant to camping is on this) or if you don't mind non-locking, a Victorinox farmer.

you could probably pick up the trailmaster or farmer depending on preference and a mora robust under $45 or around about that price that way you have 2 very good quality and inexpensive knives that are easy to sharpen and perform in the great outdoors.

+1:thumbup: on the first point, +1/2  on the other. After a season doing lots of outdoor stuff, I have become a huge fan of both Mora and OH Trekker. I don't set foot to yard or boonies without both. We part ways only on the blade. I believe the regular front first PS is just about ideal for use on fibrous stuff, such as vegetation, and is otherwise a lot more versatile than I would have thought. Vic does a good job on serrations. Although not my first choice for an EDC blade, if necessary I could easily live with it. Good old alox, but I believe the Swiss army made the right decision in 2008.
