Today I was digging through some old scouting things in a box full of goodies and discovered my patches from Philmont scout ranch in Cimarron, NM. I have always tried to collect things from my outings whether it was a patch, hiking stick, fork, spoon, etc...

These patches meant/mean a lot to me as they were my greatest backpacking feats to this day, and longest times out on the trail (I went twice).

On my first go around, my crew climbed Mt. Phillips at the peak of 11,711 ft. This was the highest I've ever been on foot at the time. Next up was the tooth of time, which is also the "logo" peak shown on the Philmont patch as it is visible from base camp.

Our second trip to Philmont involved our Venture crew, and a co-ed mix to the bunch (which was nice ). This time we went for the highest peak on Philmont which was Mt. Baldy standing at 12,441 ft. This became the highest point I've ever been to on foot and it was one helluva day making our way up it :o

So what do you guys/gals use as a memorabilia or keepsake for those breathtaking trips? Highest peak, first outing, family outing, son/daughters first trip, etc....

Hmmmm ... I have just one. It was 2002 on a hunt in Namibia. We were stalking a kudu bull and he was going up a mountian. With the sun just about to set in 30 minutes, it was now or never. Kevin McClung, my hunting budy lasered the bull and said 387 yards. I lied down and worked a 180gr Nosler Partition into the Remington barrel. As the 300 Win Mag barked, I lost sight for a moment through the scope of the animal. I looked over the top and right then, the bucks knees buckled and he dropped in between his legs as he stood ....perfect brain shot. We stayed put for 5 minutes in case he gets up ...... sitting there I looked down and there was a single black and white guinea fowl feather ...I picked it up and stuck it into the head band on my hat ...and I still have it today.

Oh, the rest ..... tooks as 1 hour to climb to where the buck was ... brain shot so he never moved. Shot taken at 17:34 ....... we managed to get the meat back to the Land Rovers at 23:40 ... I had good memories, loads of meat and no friends. They were all cursing me under their breath.

Thanks for sharing your great memories.
They are so cool!
I don't have any such cool patches.

Sometimes I pick up a stone for my memory...

I used to have a bunch of little odds and ends from trips. Two rattles from two rattlesnakes I killed and ate, three or four quarters that I shot with a .22 up in an abandoned coal mine outside of Pound, Virginia (killed the two rattlers up in the same hollow as well). Used to have a couple dozen shark teeth I picked up from a beach down on the Patuxent River (yes, there are sharks in there). One week in July back in the mid-70s when I was little. Just a bunch of beautiful rocks and all sorts of stuff over the years. Wish I had it all now!

I usually try and find a patch of each park I've backpacked in too. I think patches are a neat way to remind yourself of were you've been.

I do the patches thing also. I put them on a pack I've had for years. Got patches from all over the States and Europe.

I like these pewter site markers to remember my special hikes and climbs (not to mention my collection of trailside sticks and stones). :)

I also have a collection of buttons (just regular old buttons) that I've found at rock climbing areas that I've visited. I actually have one from every place that I've ever climbed. Velcro and fastex have really made this challenging in recent years. :D

About 3 months ago I was doing some bouldering in Palo Duro Canyon and took a 20 foot drop after the sandstone ledge I was hanging from gave out. I got up, shook myself off and found the sandstone chunk was still in my hands. On the hike out I found some eagle feathers-a drop of epoxy later and now that rock is on the wall sporting the eagle feathers. Constant reminder of a random adventure I had that costed me 5 bucks but wound up being one of the most fun days of my life. It all started with a 2,000 mile drive, some stiff legs and a brown sign on the highway.

I think you're mistaken, those weren't "eagle" feathers you found, probably just a pigeon. At least that would be best as far as the Federal government is concerned.

i got a nice big scar on my leg from the first time i went camping. i usually cut myself (or burn) somehow (not on purpose) and i use those as my memorabilias. :)

cmd nice F&L quote! btw limes dont grow in the desert :)

I usually look for odd or interesting things while I walk, so far this summer I've only found a horse shoe :(

Don't let the guys in the other thread see this, they're sworn to inform on anything. :jerkit:

You're right though, some how, some way, all of our stuff is being taken from us, land we cannot use and you can't even pick up an eagle feather...but by god! They're our's! :)

I've got an old buck vanguard.. It was one of the first good knives I bought, along with a schrade ol' timer(which dissappears and reappears over time).. Both are great and the vanguard rides with me just about everywhere(provided where sheeple don't freak out)..

I try to collect a single piece of wood to make a walking stick from. I'm way behind in the making, though. The one I'm working on now, I gathered 5 or so years ago.

It will be a good one, though.

We've got some good stuff here guys

I'm also guilty of collecting walking sticks from most of my outings. I've got a pile of them back home at my family's garage :o

I used to find old bottles when I was out and about - everything from small milk bottles to blue glass mason jars
