What GEC pattern would you pick as your most useful folding knife to accompany a fixed blade, hatchet and saw?

Thanks,

Geoff

As much as I like a combo of large clip main with a straight-edged secondary for EDC use, I find very little use for a straight-edged blade outdoors. For me it would either be a larger single blade, like the #74 drop point, or the classic moose pattern, the #81.

No GEC; they are all WAY out of my budget.

I carry either a large 4 inch plus closed stockman, or a moose pattern, trapper, large (4 inch closed) sunfish, a BSA Scout/Camp knife or SAK Huntsman or an old (Western made) "Demo" knife the Army Reserves gave/issued to me in 1975.

A Barlow and/or canoe pattern has also been known to grace my pocket when afield.

If I had to choose just one (thankfully, I don't) it would have to be the SAK or BSA or "Demo" knife. The awl/punch and can opener is just so darn handy at times.
(especially if you need to open a can of beans or something.)

Your going to get a 100 different answers lol I always have a peanut in my watch pocket. For outdoor and heavier use check out the bull buster

Yep, you gonna get as many answers as there are patterns and variants.

But my opinion is you need something with a nice straight edge and a curved edge to round out your kit. A 48 improved trapper or one of the currently available 86 oil field trappers (they have a great coping secondary and a big, tough clip primary) would be wonderful additions. Both of those are available now with a little searching.

Doesn’t matter. I would stick with whatever three folders I had in my front pocket. Unless I thought to switch one out for a sodbuster or the Alox Farmer in place of the Electrician.

If you’re looking to round out your Nessmuk trio, grab an 81 bull moose.
That said, the GECs I like best outdoors are the spear/coping combos. 92s recently available; 77s a bit harder to find; 85s...let me know if you find a two blade...

I think the current 86 is just about perfect as are ones built on the 42 frame. Always jack knives for me..... I see the single blade versions as simply missing something. :D

From a practical perspective, you could easily carry something like a #14 Boys knife. It mostly depends for me in terms of size if you tend to reach for the folder or go for the fixed blade first. The Kephart approach works .... modest fixed blade and a folder. Then toss in the folding saw.

Well heck, if I have a fixed blade, hatchet and saw, then whatever small pocket knife I have in my watch pocket will do. A peanut or small SAK will get it done well.
Just don't make the SAK too small or you'll just use it to clean your nails. :D

I got a SOG Power Pint a couple days ago... small pocket sized pliers based multi-tool that I am pretty impressed with at the moment. My old regular sized SOG Power tool was quite strong and I assume this one will be too. Options... options....

Carrying a fixed blade, hatchet and a saw, thats about the only thing left for a pocket knife out in the boonies! Yer luggin enough larger cutting tools that handle anything else but an impromptu manicure. :D

And I've opened enough packs of Mountain House freeze dried beef stroganoff and cut jute twine with a Vic classic to know it can be done. And if you chip a nail, the nail file is handy.

Charlie, have you had any luck at all, at all in talking GEC into another run of the Texas Camp Knife?
I am seriously limited at GEC, as to what I can get them to make. their business model makes it hard to do any SFOs these days. I may only get one for 2020!!
I know GEC is not keen to do the Big Camp knife any time soon.:( It's very expensive to produce!!
