Hello!

I've always been fascinated by 'Hawks and had a CS Frontier Hawk, but didn't like the design. I'm interested in getting another 'Hawk for outdoor functional usage! I'd be interested in hearing some suggestions at a reasonable price. By reasonable I would say keep it under $60...Are there some items that would fit in this category that would be worthwhile?

Thanks!

I use my Fort Turner Buck hawk for whatever I need. It rides easy in my pack, I can take the blade off and use it kind of like an ulu, it's light to carry but with the long handle it chops ok. It isn't an axe, but it works well for me.

Cold steel Norse hawk, Magnussen raves about it for cold weather survival training, makes a great ulu with 2 sharp points. Really fun to throw and a good light chopper, it bites deep.
The frontier hawk looks cool but does not have enough blade for me.

Thanks guys!

I'm leaning towards the CS Trail Hawk at the moment. It is the lightest of the CS's and has some features I like. The top at the edge is flat and not upswept and it has a hammer poll!

Thanks!

Fort Turners great b/c they are not much more than Cold Steel and IMO much much better. At least outta the box (w/o much work on fit) the average CS hawk will come loose with almost all chopping and more often than other hawks throwing. If you are going hammer pole on that budget I would definitely second RDG's FT recommendation. I have his Iroquois btw (and bowie on way), its pretty light too. However if your down to spend some time fitting the handle and thinning the edge (ragweed forge puts on a mean edge for not too much) CS will serve you well.

I have an FT Iroquois and it's OK, but personally a don't consider it a general outdoor hawk because for that, I think you want a hammer poll.

My favorite is the Cold Creek Forge jack hammer bit hawks Steve has been forging up. I just had it out last weekend and it did a ton of work for me -- it's just a beast in the field (in a good way!)

I would go with the Cold Creek or FT over a CS any day.

There is a member selling a SOG Fusion with the FRN handle in the exchange. It's in your price range and I can tell you the Head on the hawk is great. I believe the FRN handle has fixed the breakage issues they had when I got mine. I have abused the crap out of the hawk I have with no ill effects. Give the SOG a look...

Coal Creek that is, as to the Iroquois you could have him add a hammer pole on it or go with the standard pole hawk, either imo much better than Cold Steel. Never handled a Coal Creek under $60 tho?

so where do you find cold creek tomahawks?

Sorry for the slow response -- been away from my computer. And sorry for my bad on "cold" creek -- I literally had a cold as I wrote that :)

Coal Creek doesn't have a web site, but Steve is very active on this forum and you'll see some threads specifically about them.

Steve has a lot of fans here -- count me as one, for sure -- because the hawks are really special and he's just fantastic to work with.
