Hello my fellow knife nuts. Has anyone ever rehandled the SM III Outdoorsman? I was wanting to know the tang shape. I would think a rat tail tang but I`m not sure. I have seen many Cold Steel models that have had nice looking mods, but I don`t remember seeing the Outdoorsman having a make over. Thanks

Sorry I have the knife but haven't touched it. In my view it's a great looking knife the way it is. However I can't think of a more inappropriate name for it. There's nothing outdoorsy about the knife at all! I've renamed mine the Ronin.

Thanks for the reply, I have used mine and I can say it is the best Cold Steel blade I have. It is a great slicer and holds it`s edge very well considering the hollow grind is pretty thin. To me it falls into the group of knives that just looks "ok" and does not have a certain purpose in the design. But it is a ment to be used and it`s one of the best to use on the leather strop. I have not really put much thought into how I would change the handle, maybe a slim smooth handle like the Finn Bear or the R 1. Ant ideas or am I just thinking too much.....

If it's anything like the Outdoorsman Lite, it's a full and wide tang. I have used and gifted the Outdoorsman Lite and everyone is thrilled with it in both shape and sharpness. Fish, birds, firestarting, farm chores, it does everything we need. But then we all get by with Moras and Bucks and the like, so we're not busting out Busse choppers and prybars. I can only imagine how much more I'd be loving the luxury Outdoorsman original model.

the outdoors man lite is alot of knife. Did up a roadkill moose with one and a broken axe once. with a bit more gaurd and a better contoured handle, it would make a nice combat knife too. Still not a bowie, though.

Agree on the Outdoorsman Lite being a lot of knife for the price. When I'm not carrying a Bowie, I carry The Otdoorsman Lite in one of my Drawpoint sheaths. Great knife for JAK's Drawpoint method!.

The Outdoorsman looks like it's made just like the classic tanto line. If that's the case, then the tang will be a wide stick tang with a threaded bit on the end that the pommel threads onto. I've seen pics of the tangs on the tanto line, but I can't seem to find any atm. I'll keep looking.

edit: Still can't find any, so here's a pic I did of an old Master Tanto. The red represents the basic shape of the tang.

Thanks for the feed back guys. I would still like to do a little modification to this blade, however I have ran into a problem. I can`t seem to find the time!!! So until I do let me hear some of your thoughts on a new handle design. Great knife nuts think alike!!!
