Outer shell

Well after doing some great hiking this past weekend I came to the understanding that my Eddie Bauer jacket was way to heavy to use as a shell. It's fine for running around town as a warm rain jacket. What I am looking for would be some companies that might be a couple version behind the cutting edge stuff but still produce a good water tight breathable shell for a less outrageous price. Has to be sold in tall sizes. Most 2XL are way to short in the sleeves.

i think the necessity for tall sizes is going to rule out most major outdoors brands (Mountain Hardware, Patagonia, etc) But I would look at duluth trading co. they have a million sizes of the things they sell and should have something to fit your needs.

Snugpak make some good outer shells. I have had good experiences with their jackets and sleeping bags

Eddie Bauer has some great stuff. I have one of their Weatheredge jackets and that thing is nice. It has been raining here lately and I use it all the time and I come out dry every time plus they have a life time warranty on their stuff.

I like how Eddie Bauer has options to use a vest as a zip in liner rather than the usual full arm liners. Since I wear a sweater on cold days anyway, I don't want too much bulk in the arm area. I think North Face and Columbia system jackets allow that too but don't seem to be sold paired up like that.

Now that I think of it mil-surplus jackets often have vest liners as well.

bitter1 - Supposedly Eddie Bauer doesn't honour their lifetime warranty too well anymore. However my dad brought in an Eddie Bauer backpack that broke after 15 years and they didn't carry a similar model anymore. So what did they do? The manager handed $75 cash and gave him an address of another outfitter. I'll always remember that.
