A group of us have been talking about doing an outing to practice some skills, so yesterday we met up at McKinley Woods in Channahon Illinois. I thought you might want to see a few photos from our outing.

Cool outing report! Thanks for posting it. Looks like a good time was had by all. I noticed that is an oddly constructed shelter too.

There are several shelters like that all along the old I&M Canal Path. They were built by the CCC in the 1930`s.

Great get-together...looks like you guys had a lot of fun; thanks for sharing:thumbup:

Those are really cool...I really like they way they are set up. That fireplace is just sweet!

Your get together looks like a lot of fun. Wow you guys had your share of knives too. I love it:thumbup:. It looks like a great place to visit. Interesting shelters too.

JK, that place looks pretty good to have a get together to practice those long lost woods skills. I really like the shelter house theme, bet you could at least get the chill off with that fireplace. Anywhere close that allows overnighters or is this just a park area? Thanks for letting us come along.
Be safe.

You can do overnighters there, but you can`t leave your vehicle overnight.

"jds1 with the knife he won in a random drawing".

What's the deal with that?

All I had to do was pick a number between 1-100. I walked away with the first "Camper" model made. :) I'll post a review in the near future.

Here is another one of those shelters about 6 miles down the trail. It`s in much better shape.

Cheers, gotcha. I was down the road of either "design a knife" or "we all sketched what we could see".

That still would be a sweet place to have an overnight. Wives drop you off, set up camp, fish a little, practice some skill sets, fish a little, eat dinner, fish a little, breakfast time have some fireplace cooked eggs, ham, biscuits, bacon, fish a little, yeah, I can see a common thread developing here . . . :)
Neat place, especially the shelter houses. I don't think I have ever seen anything quite like those here in the Ohio park systems. Good going.
Be safe.
p.s.: jds1, excellent grab on the prize . .

Good time held by all I believe. John is giving Santa a run for his money! Looking forward to the next one next year.

That camp knife has some nice lines to it John! Handle looks very functional! Also looks like you guys had a blast.

Thanks for the pics, I really like those shelters even though they are different. I'd love to have something like that somewhere on my property. If I ever find the time maybe it'll be a good project for me to start on.

It feels like a contoured version of a Breeden Pathfinder... very cozy!
