For you Outlander fans, Jamie and Roger carry some fine looking knives, yet I havent seen a good shot of the big knives out of the sheath. They usually use the smaller patch type knives. The big ones look like Bowie types when sheathed. Do any of you have pics or info about their knives?

The larger ones are dirks, the smaller are called sqian dubhs.

Heres a tid bit on the dirks

And on the sqian dubhs a bit more:

Many dirks were made from broken broadsword blades. Both will almost always have filework on the spine.

The sgian dubh was a utility knife. The dirk a weapon.

This painting below is very important historically. It shows the detail from the Battle of Culloden or Drummosie Moor as the Highlanders called it. The Highlanders being painted were prisoners after the battle. They were wearing their own clothes that they were wearing that day and given their pick of recovered weapons. Guessing the artist had some juice. Note the two in the center that are attacking with broadswords each have a dirk in their left hand under the targe (shield). Another interesting thing this painting tells us is the idea of clan tartans didn't exist at the time.

In the *current* season the big knife Jamie is carrying does indeed look like a Bowie—and a modern one at that.

I don’t have any screenshots, but there are a couple of scenes in the most recent episode—the scene where he kills the snake, and shortly thereafter when the knife is left sticking in the ground—that you should be able to pause your DVR on and get a closer look.

I did, and got a clear shot at the snake killin time. blade shape like a larger BK9

Maybe there will be an article at some point about the knives. Something like the info released on the Rambo knives. Of course, Stallone is a knife guy, and could be the producers of Outlander are not that interested. May be just prop knives. Hope not.

Can't find any pics outside the sheath but all these clearly show a dirk not a bowie. Course can't see whats in the sheath. Also pretty period correct handle at that. They have evolved from the 1740s into more of a ceremonial item.

See in that tapered sheath no room for a bowie blade.

Did find this one, definitely looks like a dirk:

Don't know much about Outlander, I've only seen part of one episode. Do know quite a bit about the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745. My family was involved.

The breathtaking artisanship displayed in a modern presentation dirk can be seen here.

Thanks for the photos. The knife he carries in America is different from his Scotland knife. In the sheath, the sheath, handle and guard of the American knife looks like a Cold Steel Trailmaster, and in the snake cutting scene, the blade shape is similar to the BK9

I've watched all of it. The show has been covered with sgian-dubhs from the beginning, when the action was in Scotland.

Gotcha, knew he'd gone to France didn't know he made it over here.

If you look closely in this photo you can see Jamie's knife on his right side belt. I will try to find a side view showing the handle and guard

I tried to grab some screenshots; unfortunately, the Starz app won’t let me do so (I just get a black screen when I try).

I did get a better look at the blade, though, and it is very much like a BK9 in both length and profile.

That show is unwatchably terribad. Half the plot of every season boils down to "the super genius tough strong amazing hero lady does something unbelievably stupid and has to be rescued by Scottish Fabio".

My wife watches this sometimes and I wouldn't survive being in the room with it on if it weren't for the soothing effects of scotchy scotch scotch and whittling.

My ancestors were in Scotland and came to America during the same period as the series, so I enjoy the historical perspective. The treatment of the Scots by the English make it clear why my people came here.

Picture is the perfect where we can see use of Knives. It is very old and deadly weapon that is used in war in historical time
