I did many searches and couldn't find a source...

I found a plastic Oval Template Like this one

But the ovals are too Round I need one that has narrow ovals. anybody have a good source?

I've been looking for the same damn thing for the longest time.

A woodworker friend has a version of the one you show above, and you're right, the ovals are just a bit to fat for what I want.

OK Mike Q got back with me and pointed me in the right direction

PT-92-A(400)

Make your own template !! I hope I can describe this without drawings. Very easy. Two pins or small nails , string, and a pencil. Drive nails partially into a board .Tie ends of string , one to each nail.Take pencil and mark the board by running the pencil against the string ,once above and once below the line between the nails. two pins .By varying the distance between the pins and the length of the string you can make any ellipse you want !!

You can use Microsoft Word, or Paint, or Photoshop to make an Elipse.

You can draw up dozens of then on a page in different sizes, then pick the ones you want.

Count - I have pages and pages of ovals, ellipses, and other odd shapes done that way. The issue is in the transfer to hard template. I can never cut it out perfectly. Having a hard plastic, perfectly shaped, pre-marked template like Timely makes - for me - would be a huge benefit.

+1 Same problem here Peter... So now I will be making Elliptical guards instead of Oval ones ;)

I just print them out, glue them on with white glue and grind to the lines.
I do some knfe profiles the same way, so no suprise that I do that in the same way.

I do have some drafting patterns too, but not the whole sets.
Just the ones you can get in Staples here -

Of those drafting templates available what do the degrees mean?
Which ones are the most "guard like" ?

The degrees are the amount of tilt of a circle. Ellipses are just circles on an angle, or isometric view. A 45* elipse will be wider in the sort dimension than a 30*. Most templates will have two or three angles marked on them, a 2" cirlce tilted 45* will be 2" wide and 1" tall, but if turned 90* (so the long dimension is towards you) it will make a vertical 1" circle on a 45* plane.

Here's an example, the ellipse in the CF makes a perfect 1/2" circle to match up with the hole on top. I used an ellipse template when I made this razor and brush holder.

My workflow is to create a dxf, select material, load program and bam I have clean geometric shapes within a couple thou.

I grid the face of my guards, based off the ricasso, and then I can put the template in place and get it perfectly centered.
