I exchanged e-mails with both Will and Jerry Fisk on this topic and was very pleased to learn that the tang is slightly curved, quite wide and secured with both the bolts in the handle. This follows Jerry's design exemplified in his Commanchero Bowie. The OVB's tang is only slightly smaller than that used by Jerry which he describes as "way oversized." Further, and of special note, was Jerry's comment that the tang is bigger than "any antique sword concealed tang" he'd ever seen.
Will indicated that the beautiful striped maple has a "rectangular hole "broached" down through the wood" to mate with the tang.
So you have a solid, extremely well designed handle-tang design on a blade (sans handle)extensively tested by Jerry which he deems to be well satisfied with.
Bottom line:
This knife is exceptionally light and fast in the hand. And with the tang-handle design, capable of being an outstanding field performer. While quite light for chopping, the design assures me that if pressed in an emergency, it is more than up to the task!
