what exactly is the stuff like inswool? Is it just fiberglass? Could I use it for a homemade brick oven? I want to start forging my own blades but need to keep the investment down to keep my wife happy.

Inswool is a refractory wool batting.I would not use fiberglass,it won't take the flame and temperature.Inswool and the coatings are cheap.You can often get it as a kit on ebay.Some firebricks,inswool ,stiffener,and satanite will make you a good forge.All you need is the burner source.Read the many tutorials on forges(do a search).
