i went and registered for college today.

yeah. over 3 grand..so i have fifty dollars left. i need to buy a new knife to feel like i actually bought something today.

any ideas? everything is on the table.

for 50?

i'd wait till sept. and buy the new byrd cara cara and the new byrd meadowlark

i personally like the sog fusion salute too, at 30 bucks

or maybe add 10 bucks and get a recon 1?

and a tenacious if you don't have it

Take that 50, set it aside and add a couple dollars here and there until Christmas. Instant gratification is great, but you will find better fulfillment if you research something, and get the best knife you can.

Or, like I did, try to buy every knife you come across when doing said research.

i feel you on that bro.never enoght money for all the blades.

i have other money i could pull out for knives, money set aside just for that, but i just want to burn this 50. its been ahellofaday.

There are a ton of superb knives out there for $50 or less -- see this thread.

Some of my favorites at ~$50 are the Spyderco Native, Spyderco Endura, and Boker Plus Exskelibur. You could also split the $50 among a quality ~$30 locking folder like the Tenacious or RAT 1 and a ~$20 Victorinox.

believe it or not i have never had a victorinox. not one.

i have the tenacious and the rat 1..by the way have you tried its replacement, utilitac 2? its awesome as hell..$40

thanks for the advice man.

wow. way back in the olden days when i went to university, tuition was about $400 per semester.

Congratulations on getting started on college!

Go for a Victorinox, get a basic style like the Victorinox Silver Alox Soldier. It will hold up to real work, including opening cans and bottles, and the awl will make holes in your belt as you lose weight -- critical functions for a starving college student. :)

You know what folders are all about, try a slipjoint utility like the Soldier for its different and very valuable functions.

wellll thennnn

how about buck vantage pro? bos treated s30v for about 50 bucks?

and as far as the meadowlark and the cara cara, i was referring to the second generation full flat ground ones coming in this september

ive got pretty high expectations for those myself

I'd highly recommend getting a Vic (or two), then! They're ridiculously handy and make a great EDC complement to a larger locking folder. There are a lot to choose from, but Victorinox has a cool function on their website that allows you to select the tools you want and search their models for ones that meet your criteria.

Thanks for the heads-up on the Utilitac 2! I had considered getting a Utilitac 1 a while back: I really liked the design, but ultimately it dropped off my radar because of the "440 steel". But it looks like the Utilitac 2 remedies that by using AUS 8, which Ontario did a great job with on the RAT 1. Thanks again!

Oh, and congrats on registering for college, and good luck!

From the title, I expected a photo full of custom knives. :(

Seriously, congrats and keep at it.

sounds like you are pretty set on knives....$50 goes a long way on pizza and beer in college....or at least it did in my day :o
;)J

Thats like the cost of one weekend out nowadays :(. Darn inflation :thumbdn:.

I would definitly get a victorinox epecially if you dont own one yet. Also another thing to remember is that most campuses dont allow you to carry certain knives or even any sort of knife. I know I can only carry a victorinox on my campus so even more reason to buy one if I were in your shoes.

Why not get a tactical pen to go along with school, something like this and it fits in the budget...http://countycomm.com/PEN.htm

haha. hell yeah. i bought one for my ladyfriend a while back she loves the shit out of it.

i was sitting in the registeration office flipping my spyderco bailyo. and i was getting all sorts of looks. shit its just a pen.

thanks for the advice man.

i know. when my sister went (about 7 years ago) it was old 1300.
times change man... if it was only 400 i would be sitting fat.

but its the cost of education. well worth twice what i paid. [:

thanks for the input. its good to see how thing change. even when its criminal.
