I seem to buy 2 or 3 knives a year, pretty steadily now for the past 5 or 6 years. There may have been a few 4 knife years in there somewhere too. The vast majority of these were high and medium end production knives though there has been a gradual shift to customs of the "user" variety over the last 3 years.
This has left me with a not inconsiderable collection of decent knives, some of which are rarely used now. I'm going to get to the point where I know it makes no sense to order another knife from anyone. All the possible knife applications I can forsee for myself for the rest of my life is repleatly covered by what I already have. Yes I'm still enjoying myself with all of these knives, though as I said, some are rarely used.
This summer I await the arrival of my first "true custom" in the sense that it is a one-of-a-kind, something collaboratively designed by myself and the knife maker, in this case, George Tichbourne. That is another sort of hump to get over I suppose.
Mostly the knife is a combination of handle and blade shape already in George's catalog (from two different knives), executed in a somewhat thinner profile, 3/32", than is common. I'm a proponent of the "thin just cuts better" school of thought, and there is enough strength in modern steels, especially at say 1" in width, that you can get away with dropping the thickness under 1/8" in a blade up to 5" in length. This one happens to be 4", my ideal utility knife length.
So we're going to see what happens to this, but if it is as nice as I think its going to be, I might have to redirect my knife collecting again to a thin version of everything I already have
