Over the last decade - has there really been an almost 350% increase?

I was put on a contact list for a major knife manufaturer to be informed when one of their limited editions was to be released.

I got the e-mail reminder today stating that the limited edition was now available to order.

I had purchased the same blade directly from them about ten years ago. So imagine my shock - and disappointment (There was no way I could afford the new price) When I was informed that MSRP was now about 350% higher than what I paid ten years ago.

I get it, everything nowadays is more expensive. Materials, Labor, all that is pricier.

But, wow.

I'm whining just a little bit - what are your thoughts? Am I wrong for being a little disappointed?

Well now you gotta tell us which manufacturer and which knife?! Dont leave us hanging!

The original post is so vague that you're te only person qualified to relate to the problem you've experienced...

Spyderco Bob Lum Fixed Blade Tanto.

I got from Spyderco Factory Outlet in for about $120, awhile back.

Announced MSRP on the new one... $379

Well, duh. That's MSRP. The MSRP on the spyderco tuff is 400, but only a fool would pay that much as I just bought one for 200 shipped off a popular auction site.

I don't know if their pricing structure has changed, but, honestly, that seems to be pretty much on par with all of the other manufacturers. Cold steel lists at roughly double street price, as does Spyderco, Sog, Benchmade, Kershaw, CRKT...

SFO gives a 25% discount if you walk in. Which I did back then and planned to do again.

Still a pretty hefty jump.

Honestly, I'd just wait a week and snag one off the forums or the bay. Cheaper every time.

Yes, it is worth it to wait for it from some of the better dealers to get it in stock.

Don't pay full retail, when you can get it for a much better street price.

$120 probably was clearance or some promotion. I am pretty sure that MSRP for original Lum Tanto was $200. So it looks like 190% and not 350%. Also blade was AUS8 vs VG10 on the new model, which is more expensive. Ten years ago we also paid half of what we pay now for gas, bread, milk and so on. The pain, which we all (almost all) have comes from the fact that our pay didn't go up twice.
I saw the blade at one of the dealers @ 220 shipped, but he had only five and probably sold out. Probably street price will be around $240-250.

Um no there hasn't. Using 120 and 390 there has been exactly a 215.8333 percent increase. May I suggest you spend the money on math tutoring

Also, BH49, using your 200 MSRP to his 379 is not 190% increase, but rather 89.50% increase.

I don't think you are wrong for being disappointed. I'm surprised that you seem to notice the price jump in knives and nothing else. 10 years ago, a gallon of unleaded gasoline cost about $1.70, now it's at or over $3.50 in most places. The prices of everything goes up. It's something that has been happening for centuries. The cost of labor, materials, tools, etc have all gone in one direction since then. Add to that the nuclear disaster a few years ago in Japan and that adds to the cost. The Yen to Dollar exchange rate, and about a dozen other variables makes it anything but a surprise.

I don't understand. Using those numbers, I get a 225% increase. Maybe I need the math classes? :)

I remember when the Lum Tanto were on clearance on the spyderco site for $75 when msrp was $200, one deal Ill never forget. Knew a dealer who had them on his shelves for the spyderco recomended suggested retail price at that same time and boy was he ticked when I told him you could get them for $75 direct :D

I always had respect to people with good math skills.
Just wondering, where did you see the word "increase" in my post? Also if you want to be accurate to .5%, MSRP for Lum Tanto sprint is $379.99, for original $199.99, so new MSRP to compare to old is 190%.
