Ever seen a knife that just wasn't your style, but yet still gorgeous, presented to you for sale at a price you simply couldn't pass up? Well, here's one that just happened to me.

I've always been curious about the draw that Doctors' knives have, but never personally been drawn to own one. However, the materials and craftsmanship of this Overeynder piece were pleasing enough to the eye (with a price that shouted "buy me quick") that I just had to pull the trigger on it.

Really nice pearl, 18K bolsters, 18k pins and 18k escutcheon, engraving by Tim George, perfect snappy action, 3" blades, half stops, about 7" overall. What was that seller thinking, crazy price and all (priced less than if the fittings were nickel silver)? Maybe I am out of my element, and Doctors' knives have very little market appeal? That's what I'm thinking. Any comments or thoughts are appreciated, since this one may be a learning experience for me.

Take a look at three different Tony Bose Doctor's knives currently listed in the custom sales forum here at BF. The veterinary scalpel one is a new one on me.

You got a nice piece by one of the best makers out there at a good price, just grin from ear to ear.
Joel

Joel, that's frankly my take on it, too. The grin started when I bought it and, trust me, the grin got wider and wider when it arrived and I opened the package. But because this is not a normal purchase for me, thought I would just see what others might have to say. I didn't expect such an authority as yourself to be my first response - and I think you've pretty much answered the question I was posing.

I frequent the custom sales forum just as much as I do this forum. I'm surprised I missed that thread. Definitely keeps the grins goin'. Thanks for pointing it out.

That Bose Veterinary knife makes me smile too. It kind of reminds me of that Loveless scalpel fixed blade pair that was shown on this forum once. If I remember correctly, ordered by a pathologist from Los Angeles. Stainless handles so they could be sterilized easier.

I had never even heard of a stews blade/one arm blade but when I saw this Davison at the price I jumped on it.

I think you are probably correct that doctor's knives do not have a broad market appeal. They are not my cup of tea. But if they were I cannot imagine a much finer example than the one you posted here.

IMO, we don't see enough of Tom Overeynder's knives here. I think he is one of the finest and seemingly (to me) underrated and underappreciated knifemakers there is. The mechanical precision of his knives is extraordinary. They open and close so smoothly and perfectly. And many models have hidden pins which I wish more makers would do to enhance the appearance and refinement of their knives. Plus, compared to prices I see for so many other knives, IMO his knives represent a good value in terms of what you get for what you pay. And yes, I have put my money where my mouth is, as one well-known member here seems to like to ask. :)

Thanks for sharing this here, Bob.

Is it not a valid question, Ken?

I don't own any of Tom's work, not because I don't like it(I LOVE Tom's work), but because my "O" knives are happily occupied by Warren Osborne, who I consider a contemporary of Tom's.

The Doctor's knife is indeed a unique flavor, and like others, I consider this version to be the top of the game.

Best Regards,

Im personally a big fan of gold against white pearl. I've also always liked doctors knives although I never owned one. Congrats on this is a special piece. Might be the photo but it looks like rose gold to me.

Jon, I forgot to include that bit of detail. In fact, it is rose gold. Good eye.

Beautiful knife Bob... I like some of the "exotic" designs like this one, or say a fruit testing knife, and when made with premium materials with a bit of bling thrown in, I find them really cool... T. O. is fine knife maker... Best Regards, Rich

Well there it is, rose gold is my favorite kind of gold so that and white pearl is my favorite combination. Something I may focus on more if I can one day.

This is yellow gold but just an example of that gold/pearl thing.

Thank you for showing!
It is a fantastic knife, super clean, with amazingly domed pins on pearl....really great craftmanship!

Ok, let's pretend we have this pattern without gold and pearl....i think it is still an useful pattern, even if not used by a doctor, and that push tongue blade could be used for other tasks, i.e. spreading butter on bread :)

Thank you for posting this one. A real beauty!

Tom is a real gentleman and a brilliant knife maker. I have several of his knives in my collection and they are all flawless.

It is also interesting that this engraved piece is rose gold. Most engravers hate working with rose so you have something special there. Enjoy!:)

Whether or not you like that particular style, it is undeniably a fine piece by a great maker. I too am a fan of gold over pearl and the fit n finish on this folder appears spot on. Congrats on the pick up.

Beautiful piece. I'm also a big fan of gold with white pearl.

Well, there ya go. Who says it hasta' be a doctor's knife? Looks like it would make a perfect bagel knife! :)
