Friday I went on an overnight trip to Mosquito Lakes in Sequoia NP. And they certainly lived up to their name, the mosquitoes were numerous and voracious. I went with some of my regular hiking friends, and Ray Laconico came as well.

We started at Mineral King:

Soon we crossed Eagle Creek:

Mosquito Lake #1 is at the end of the regular trail. Good brook trout fishing here.

From Lake #1 it is a steep off trail hike to Lake #2. The good thing about that is that we had it all to ourselves.

Some views in camp; here is Ray cooking dinner:

Yesterday morning I went up the basin to the higher lakes. This is looking down on Lake #2

Beautiful pictures.

How did you deal with the mosquitoes? Just plain old Deet? Did the mosquitoes get you despite that?

Mosquitoes and biting insects are the #1 reason that can sour my mood for the outdoors.

The only tree of note that I saw was this Western White Pine just below Lake #2

I took a few pictures on the trail going down of the peaks on the east side of Mineral King, which is where I normally go (I have been on top of a number of those peaks)

It was a very nice trip. There were only two things wrong - the mosquitoes and the fact that I couldn't stay longer. At least regular application of DEET took care of the mosquitoes.

Omigosh.

Well, Mosquito Lakes have officially been added to my list of must-do hikes. Those photos are amazing. It looks like perfect hiking / camping country. The crystal-clear shots of mountains reflected in the water are particularly awesome.

Great name for a lake, too. When you think about it, if the objective is to keep one's prime hiking spot a secret, the name should be unappealing. "Mosquito Lakes" sounds like it just might discourage some novice campers. For true seclusion, though, I would go with something like "Disappearance Lake" or "Lake of Maulings". :D

Thanks for sharing!

All the best,

- Mike

PS - any knife content? With Ray along, there must have been some nifty sharp things ...

The reflections in the water are priceless. They are awesome pictures. Although, the name of the lake alone might keep me away from them!

Some amazing pics buddy, I'm truly jealous, that looks a picture perfect area !!!!!

Ray Laconico looks younger than I imagined him ! A lot of talent for such a young guy !!!!

I didn't take any knife pictures there, but I was carrying the lower knife in this picture

And my son was carrying this one:

The mosquitoes were a lot worse at the first lake where there wasn't a breeze. We camped at Lake 2 where it wasn't as bad and during the day yesterday when it got breezy there were no mosquitoes at all. When I was using my 100% deet spray, the mosquitoes wouldn't touch me. It was a great place that doesn't get a lot of people because of the name and there's no real trail to get to it for about the last mile or so. Our group was the only one there and that's the way I like it!:)

I'll add these few pictures that I took..

I'm actually 35 years old. People usually think I'm a lot younger. Sometimes vendors knock at my door and ask to speak to my parents:D
