howdy, yall

lurked for awhile, had a username, seem to have had it deleted. lurked some more. need a question answered quick, if anyone knows anything.

i'm heading to the other side of the pond (great britain and france, specifically) shortly. what are knife laws concerning the following two issues:

bringing on plane (can i put one or two in my suitcase that goes under the plane? are the airports extra nervous about international flights, where i might go into the bathroom, tunnel through the floor, into the luggage area, retrieve my knife, and use it to cut one of their pillows?)

carrying on the streets of london and paris, and surrounding areas?

it would be bad if i were to get in trouble while over there, i'm assuming. if nobody knows for absolute sure/can't point me to an official site showing that they're legal, i'll go naked. otherwise, i'd love to be carrying my sifu, or, if i can't bring that, my crkt m-16-02, or, if i'm really desperate, my gerber BYO - not that some mugger with bad teeth will wait at the "kerb" while i open my knife.

thanks, y'all.

Go to Community, European knife commnity and do SEARCH for the topic. I think your question will be answered.

Hi,

I can´t tell you anything about France, but I´ve heard, that England has very strict laws = no allowance of carrying any knifes in public. But IMO is just that illegal, what is seen, so if you don´t run around and show everyone the knive, nobody will feel disturbed!
About the plane and airport security, I won´t be worried. Just remind, that you are not allowed to take knives and even a nail file into the plane. But taking them with you in the suitcases (not the handluggage!) will be no problem (I took a Cold Steel Dagger and some folders with me flying from PHX to Frankfurt).

Have a good time in Europe,

Jochen

Do a quick search in this forum and the European Forum . There is a link to a British web site that explains the law. As I remember it, knives can be legally carried in England but must be under 3" and non-locking. (i.e. SAKs) A friend of mine carried a Swisschamp all over England, used it in public and had no problems. I wouldn't carry anything that looked vaguely tactical though....

But I can't emphasize enough that you should check the law yourself. If you can't find the site here then email the British consulate or embassy. I'm sure that they will provide you with a site.
