Oversized sheaths

One of my biggest complaints with fixed blades is that a lot of the sheaths they come with are too big. A lot of them look like knife shaped envelopes. To me the carry system is almost just as important as the knife itself, and if the sheath is the size of a duffel bag, then unfortunately the knife is a no-go
Do I suffer alone in this?

I totally agree with you. I have a lot custom made by David Brown at Buy Brown sheaths. Too many blades come with poor sheaths or none at all. Custom fitted kydex is nice for storage and not likely to cause your blade to rust.

I probably need 20 made a year.

My Kabar Mark II came with a cheap-looking sheath that was far too large, and from quite thin leather, so I made another from latigo saddle leather that is much more compact. Most of the leather sheaths from manufacturers don't live up to the knives: Roselli's are made from thin leather with slots instead of belt loops, albeit with a useful plastic liner which I kept when I made new sheaths; my Benchmade's Puukko 200 came with a nicely designed sheath but the leather was thin and overall shabby. I used it as a pattern to make another from heftier leather. The best factory sheaths I have, for my Fieldcraft and Campcraft, came from Mike Stewart's shop at Marble's a couple decades back: good, solid well-stitched thick leather with sturdy welts.
