Overtightened rivet on my Delica

Stuck my Delica in a vice today to try to get rid of the blade play. Went a little overboard and now the knife barely opens. Impossible to open with one hand. Is there any way at all to loosen the rivets?

Sorry, but the only way I know of is to send it back to Spyderco for repair (not warranty). You should give their Warranty and Repair Department a call at 800-525-7770 ext 255 and speak to Amanda to find out if they can fix it and how much it will cost before sending it.

Hope this helps!

Put the open and locked blade into a vise, stuff it, that it cannot scratch, and then bend the handle carefully from one side to the other. This procedure should loosen the rivet.

Stick it on the freezer for 30 minutes, take it out, and see if it opens easier. This works on knives a little tight from the factory. Yours might be too far gone. It sounds like it is tighter than anything I have tried this with.

If you can, fit a thin sheet of paper (cheap magazine page) or plastic wrap between one side of the blade and handle. Do it on both sides of the pivot pin as much as possible to make it "level". Let it reach room temperature for a while. Do not try to remove the paper or plastic while it is warm, as it will probably rip off and be a pain to ever remove. Freeze it again and remove the paper/plastic. Check tightness and repeat if desired.

Bending it in the vice might be faster and just as good (or even necessary if it is too tight for freezing to help), but I am afraid to try it.

This is how I did it with my Pacific Salt.
I hammered the pivot to the point it couldn't be opened with one hand. Then put the pivot area of the closed knife in the hot hair blower air for ten minutes.
Let it cool. Then put oil in the pivot and work the knife. The the hair blower for another 10 minutes, let it cool and it should be OK now.
Caution however with the hammering of the pivot though. To correct the daylight between the scales of my Delica I went overboard with the hammering of the pivot to the point that the FRN scales are worse than they were in the first place.

I would say wiggling the blade back and forth laterally in the open position would probably reverse the vice job you did. This doesn't sound too safe....

Yeah, but that's the point. Wiggling the blade laterally will loosen the rivet. After that you have to to tighten the rivet again, but carefully. Hammer it softly, check for bladeplay. Do it again and again, 'till you're satisfied. It worked fine on my Delica.

I tried wiggling the blade too, but the FRN is so tough, it didn't make much difference in terms of loosening up.
