At the A.B.S. hammer-in Oct 7-9 2011 in Visalia, CA (Contact Mike Vagnino)

David Lisch demonstrated how to texture and shape wrought iron for guards & blade furniture.

I absolutely love it! Not only was it educational but very entertaining. I told Dave I would post a few pic's when I had a knife done. Well, it has taken a few month's as I had to remodel a house I bought AND finish out the shop. So.. here it is, my first Turkish Twist

Over all length 14 1/4"
Blade length 9 1/4" 1084 & 15n20 Turkish Twist.
Handle 5" Stellar Sea Cow
Guard & Butt cap 1800's wagon wheel wrought iron.
Heat Colored copper spacer and German silver
Sheath: 8-9 oz Basket weave stamp, Ostrich leg overlay, deer skin lined, shark skin strap

Aaron That came out very nice it is a great package with that nice sheath. Aaron did a very nice sheath demo at the hammer in I have yet to try what I learned from him but soon I hope . Aaron will this knife be at the OKCA?

That looks terrible...you should send it to me so that I can dispose of it for you :D

Just kidding, that's awesome...very nice work.

Nice job AAron. There's hope for you after all. And Dave L. does have a few neat things up his sleeve. Give me a call when you get a chance ,need to talk about this years hammer-in.

Thanks for the comments!! This is my first post more to come. Dave I won't be at OKCA this year. I just finished my shop a few weeks ago and I have nothing made and some catching up to do. This knife is already on it's way to it's new owner.

Aaron, that is some great Turkish twist and the flowed in S-guard is the icing on the cake. Glad to hear you got the shop finished:thumbup:.

That's a beautiful knife, very well done. I particularly like the guard shape, it flows extremely well.

Thanks for the pics.

Nice job Aaron! It was great to watch David Lisch perform that demo and even greater to see what you came up with. That is a sweet looking knife.

Thats a really nice pattern! I have been wondering something for quite a while now. Why do so many people use wrot iron for the bolsters, guards and pommels? Just a curious question is all.

Thank you for the nice comments. The reason I like wrought iron is that it has a warm, organic, earthy feel and look. It can be textured and is easy to machine, grind, shape and forge. I work with stainless steel, nickel silver and Damascus for handle furniture, wrought iron adds variety to the materials I work with. Good Question!! David Lisch really is the expert working with this material.

+1 - I have always been fascinated with it's look and texture ever since the first time I saw a hilt made out of it. I would love to see more makers using it! But that's me. :)

Ahh I agree it looks very nice and I like the fact that it is so old.
