I am new to the Buck forum. The best welcome I could receive is for owners of the INTREPID to give me some feedback, as I might buy one. Only seen pictures, but it looks like a rugged tool. I'll appreciate any comments whatsoever, or try some of my questions below:

(1) How would you rate it as a survival knife?
(2) Has anyone here used it for diving?
(3) Prefer long or short blade? Tanto or chisel?
(4) Is the 2 inch cutter on top very useful?
(5) Comments on the handles and/or sheath?
(6) Anything about the design you would change?
(7) Worth the price tag? Who offers a good deal?

-Thanks much!

P.S. I am a fan of Buck knives for two reasons ... good quality, and I heard the Buck family are God fearing people like me.

I HAVE THE LARGE INTREPID. I USED IT TO WHITTLE DOWN A HARDWOOD TOOL HANDLE AND IT CUT THRU HARDWOOD LIKE IT WAS BUTTER. NOTHING ELSE WAS MAKING MUCH OF A DENT. AS FOR THE HATCHET GRIND ON THE TOP SIDE, IN THE CONTEXT OF A SURVIVAL KNIFE, IT ALLOWS YOU TO RESERVE THE PRIMARY CUTTING EDGE FOR OTHER WORK, WHILE USING THE HATCHET EDGE FOR ROUGHER TASKS, SUCH AS CUTTING LIMBS FOR SHELTER. I HAVE A FEW QUESTIONS TOO: (1) ON THE LARGE MODEL, THERE IS A 3/4 " LONG, FLAT SECTION BETWEEN THE SERRATED BLADE AND THE HANDGUARD (CHOIL). WHAT IS IT'S PURPOSE ? (2) THERE ARE 2 LANYARD HOLES IN THE POMMEL AND 2 IN THE HANDGUARD. I SUPPOSE ONE COULD USE THESE TO ATTACH TO A POLE AND MAKE A SPEAR, BUT ARE THERE ANY OTHER USES ? THIS KNIFE HAS A LOT OF FEATURES, BUT DID NOT COME WITH ANY INSTRUCTIONS. I WOULD ALSO SUGGEST THAT IT COME WITH AN EXTRA PAIR OF YELLOW HANDLES, IF IT IS TO BE USED AS A DIVING KNIFE.

First of all, welcome to the forums!

Here is a pic of what it looks like with a wrapped handle. Nothing wrong with the grip which comes with it, I just wanted to try it this way for awhile.

Hi...

(1) How would you rate it as a survival knife?

Not Very good...Good solid knife,, but too complicated...

(2) Has anyone here used it for diving?

I could see it as a good diving knife though..

(3) Prefer long or short blade? Tanto or chisel?

I like the Tanto version myself..

(4) Is the 2 inch cutter on top very useful?

As a survival knife, I don't like it,, it may even be dangerous..

(5) Comments on the handles and/or sheath?

Handles are pretty good and filling,, The sheath isn't too bad either...7/10
Better than I've seen on some thats for sure

(6) Anything about the design you would change?

Soften or even remove the traction from the inside of the guards..They are Very sharp and bother the hand after only using it for short periods of time.. Long extened periods with this traction could cause serious abrasion to the hands..

I could see this traction being very useful as a dive knife, after all this knife comes from Kit's U2 Dive knife design.. On land though,, these things that are good in a dive knife,, may become problematic on a field knife..

(7) Worth the price tag? Who offers a good deal?

As a survival knife,,it wouldn't be my first pick.. Maybe it wouldas a dive knife though..

It is a good stout solid blade No Doubt..
