What are you experiences with these knives? I actually had a gerber freeman, for about a whole 2 weeks while in abu ghurayb, and sold it as I was trying to make some room for other stuff, and really didnt have an immediate need for it at the time.. Now I wish I had it.

So how's their edge holding abilities? Anyone snap any blades at all?

I love the ergonomics of the Nighthawk. Try to handle one before you buy - as with all ergonomically-designed products, they'll fit some peoples' hands but not others'.

I don't own the Gerber you've mentioned, but I've seen them and the Buck looks and feels like it's a better-made product.

You can search the forums for "Nighthawk" and find lots of additional information. I recall reading about a soldier who gave the Nighthawk a very good review after carrying one during winter survival training.

i looked, but didnt really find a whole lot of information pertaining to what i was hopin for. so gerbers suck eh? when did this happen in your guys' opinions..

All gerbers may not "suck" as they can be an ok buy for the money, But I wasn't at all impressed with the fixed blade freeman. It was a roughly made knife.

I have a fixed blade Gerber Freeman in S30V steel, made in the U.S.A., that I bought from Cabela's. It seems to be well made but, unfortunately, I can't say how well it would hold up as I have only used it, once, to slice some cheese. It was lousy for that job as the blade is too thick. :o I also have a Buck Nighthawk but it hasn't even been used to slice cheese. Even though I consider all my knives to be users I rarely ever use my fixed blades. I need to get out to the woods more.

I too have a Gerber Freeman in S30V from Cabelas (made in Portland, Or. USA). When I read about "chipping" in S30V I went outside and cut up into little pieces 6 double walled appliance boxes (refrig size). The corners were all four layers thick. Did not chip. Did not dull. A few licks on the leather and it would shave again. The cabelas version is a different steel, wood and finish. For a skinner it is well worth the $90 cabelas gets. I saw the normal Fixed Freemans at the Portland Gun and Knife show for $29. Probably worth it.

Frankly disappointed by my Gerber folder (mail-order)not very well-made and even bulky in the wrong way.I've had no other experiences of Gerber but i'm not minded to try.Buck folders seem good value and well put together, the ones I've come across.
