Looking to purchase either the Victorinox Swiss Army SwissTool Spirit Oxidized Black or the Leatherman Blast Black Oxide ....however, have been reading about durability issues with the oxidized coating?? any feedback?? Just really wanted the flat black look, but if the oxidized coating wont last....is it worth it?

Black oxide will reduce reflected light (important during combat... or stealth maintenance operations around the house). Both of those multi-tools are stainless steel so it's not really necessary as a protective coating. It seems as though you like the appearance of a black multi-tool so I can't really say if it's worth it. Here's what one looks like after some use:

It looks worn but the scars give it character! ;)

Well, now you see.. that's a tough question indeed.
As true worth is mostly hard to define.
But speaking for one who is similarly drawn to the flat black qualities of which only a black ox finish can provide, i am equally forced to consider the life span of such a finish.
So IMHO, if you're prepared to pay... always go for a model with a more hard wearing finish. But if black ox is the only finish made available to you, than it becomes obvious that you just might have to buy another later on for keeps - if only because you enjoy looking at a pristine flat black finish product.

It will wear, it will come off some, and you'll have un-evenness, but all coatings come off and it does it's job. We consider it "personality or our own unique look" and unless you want it for a shelf/safe-queen!

I wouldn't worry about it, it will last long enough and do it's job ;)

thanks for the input....I don't mind the tool looking used...because it will be used....but looks like the tool will hold up to the extent I will need it to....
