Oyabun

I don't have either model. However, I have been looking at them and the 9" would be what I would get. Of course the answer will depend on what you are going to do with it. Will it be used for dispaly, survival, self-defense, etc? Personally, I don't particularly like the tanto style for most "practical" (survival, camping) type chores and these blades are a bit big (in my opinion) for these types of things. However, I think the Oyabun 9" would be great for the possibility of self-defense. I really don't have any training in the use of edged weapons for self defense so my opinion is purely theoretical. It just looks to me like it would do well in a fight. So, I think it depends on what you intend to use the knife for. For some applications 9" is too big.

If I ever get an Oyabun, It'll be the 9".

I have to admit that I bought a 7.5" Oyabun about a year and a half ago. It's a nice knife but, of course, the problem is that I never use it. If you want a pure self-defense knife, it's a good choice though; you can keep it under your bed or in your car or whatever.

The retail price is a bit high, in my opinion. The one I got was 30% off because a button had broken off the sheath. If you search around, you might be able to find a good deal.

I would sort of discourage buying an Oyabun and recommend instead a more versatile using knife. If you really want an Oyabun though, you might want to consider the 7.5". One of the nice things about an Oyabun is it's extremely light weight, and the smaller model will take full advantage of this feature.

Cerulean, Thanks for the advice, Maybe I should consider a Kobun, 5.5" blade.

I got a 9" Oyabun, and I like it because it is a VERY fast fighter for its size. I would only use it for self-defense in mind, though.

I have a Kobun - actually I use it as a camping knife, it's light and the tip is strong, does most utility tasks fine (those serrations would make dressing game or filleting a fish impossible, however). As a self-defense knife I find the handle a bit thin for me to feel completely secure. I'd recommend holding one before you buy, if possible, to see how the handle suits you. FF
