hey folks. im trying to decide which blade to go for next. i am taking a diving course this winter and have large scallop beds right next to my place. I will be shucking loads of scallops and oysters but would like to use the blade for other tasks as well. I was wondering if any of you use your busses for this type of thing or if you could point me in the right direction. Cheers

Mark

That sounds real tough. Maybe I'm spoiled because I started with a proper oyster knife, but because of that, I can't see any regular knife working for this task at all. You need it really thin, narrow, stout, unsharpened blade with a bent tip. Eh, I won't continue, I'd just be describing an oyster knife :p but that's like the opposite of all that Busse stands for

If I had to take a guess, I would say a modified game warden. Give it a dagger grind, bend the tip, blunt the edge, but maybe keep a small part of it near the handle serrated for all your underwater tasks. But any edge like that would be really dangerous to shuck oysters with. An active duty could work too, modified, of course.

Yeah i have accepted that there will be some danger. I will more than likely be using a thick glove for my left hand protection. This would be mostly for shore/boat shucking. When at home I use a proper oyster knife. I can see the game warden being usefull.

I was recently traveling the west coast and stopped in a town called coos bay and shucked oysters every night. As bad as I wanted to use my busse for the task, pushing the tip of a knife like that towards your hand on a slippery oyster is just not worth it. Uyotg has a good about modifying a smaller blade to be more like an oyster knife. My advise would be to just look online for a bada** oyster knife and keep my busse edges sharp.

I saw a chef run an oyster knife through his hand once,
Permanent nerve damage was the result, Thank god it wasn't sharp:cool::thumbdn:

maybe a nice busse custom oyster knife should be available for me. :D

Hah, I was gonna say that, but you needed to cut other things too.... If you do it, I'd guess it at maybe $400 :p true custom INFI is about $100 an inch, and those things don't need to be too long.
Also, if you do it, you must show us.

Maybe in a pinch or as a survival thing, but I have to agree with the others, sharp knife pointed at your hand even with a glove = bad idea.

Let alone a Busse.

Ask me how I know.

Carry two knives, one for shucking the oysters and scallops and the other for shucking bad guys :)

I grew up in coos bay. My father was a fishermen. My first job was on the docks at 12. And I have worked all jobs on a fishing boat. I have shucked thousands of oysters Use the proper tool for the job. Not a busse! You will regret it on the way to the hospital, think about it. plus if your going to be on a charter boat the captain is just going to ask if you're Retarded and take your knife away after he watches you try and stab yourself on his boat just saying

Coos bay was one of my favorite stops. 2 dozen oysters (every single one larger than any I've ever had) for $12. Beautiful place!

That sounds like a steal.

I got cholera (a type of food poisoning) from some raw shellfish two weeks ago. Haven't learned my lesson :) still love the stuff

maybe one of the ice picks ,the spine of a .32 ash-1, a Pauls hatchet might do, or take a gladius to dig em up and smash em:D

I would say the Sus Scrofa - but then I like my thumbs [attached] too much........so no.:D:thumbup::eek:

Fear IT!!!

Ha suppertramp. the boat id be on will be my own. I wonder if jerry would grind one up for me. it shouldnt be too difficult.

I like the ice pick idea. I would modify or have it modified. I open oysters with a churchkey, little clams with an old dullish paring knife surf clams for bait with a skelly warden.

Fried, wrapped in bacon or with butter and Ritz cracker casserole, please! :)

(Scaaaaaaalups, not Ursters.)

Save your busse and have one of the 'custom knifemakers' online give you a quote for something you design. Williamsknife.com makes custom oyster knives....though it sounds like he has a 5 month waiting list right now. I've bent my share of store bought oyster knives. I'm a new knifemaker, but plan on building a couple of prototypes for my use with some hardy micarta handles. Small handles result in hand cramps after a few dozen.
