Hi Guys

The blade for this bull nosed skinner was forged from a cold chisel. The blade length is 130mm, 6mm thick on the spine and the knife is 250mm long overall. The spine of the blade has been chamfered 30mm back from the point to reduce drag when piercing but retain maximum tip strength. The blade has had clay applied to the spine and is differentially hardened. There is a nice transition line on the secondry bevel between these two areas.
The handle scales are stabilised fish tail oak with blue handle liners held to the tapered tang with two stainless corby bolts, the handle also has a S/S thong tube.
The sheath is a wet formed deep pouch style, with a little tooling around it's throat and dyed mahogany brown. The sheath also has blue stitching to pick up with the blue liners in the handle.
Thank you for taking the time to look. All comments and questions very welcome.

All the best

Steve

Thanks for your comments guys, the gent who ordered this will be picking it up today. I'm looking forward to seeing him, he's a local deer stalker so I know it will get plenty of use.

Craig it has taken a beautiful edge buddy. I can't be 110% certain of it's carbon content but I know that it wasn't a chrome vanadium chisel. It was a standard Eclipse chisel which are made from high carbon steel. I cut some test pieces fron the original forged billet and tested these in the workshop. The pieces were 30mm x 8mm x 6mm. They were heated to non magnetic and quenched in oil, I tested these with my Hrc files and the the steel was 65 Hrc. I placed one test piece in the vice and struck it with a 3lb cross peen hammer, the test piece broke on the second hard strike. The break was clean and the grain structure was fine and a light grey in colour. I tempered the second piece in the oven at 250c for two hours. Removed and allowed to cool, tested with the files and the hardness was now 60Hrc. I placed this piece in the vice and again hit it with the 3lb hammer. It took 5 hard hits to break the piece this time.
I'm quite sure that this will perform really well as a skinner for the customer.
