Took my 8 year old out this weekend for a walk on the woods. We hiked on the Butterfield trail at Devils Den Arkansas. Here she is at the beginning.

This overlook is called Vista Point. My pictures do not do it justice.

Packing pretty light for the day

After that we took a side trail to two old CCC rock quarries. Built a fire and roasted some sausages. (no pics as I was fire tending. Here are my tools for the day.

From left to right: BB gun for the kid and me to shoot at trash( not our trash and we packed it out afterward), a handmade hunter of unknown origin, my EDC Gerber Remix, a necker I made, multitool, and my Fiskars folding saw.

Here is the kiddo at the end after about 6 miles. She is a trooper!

Thanks for looking! Sorry for the poor picture quality. I am no photographer.

The pics don't matter; you spent quality time with your kid, that's all that matters!!

It looks like she enjoyed herself

Looks like a fun day. You're right, she is a real trooper. Nice pictures!

p.s. - how were the sausages?

I love that area. And the sign is correct. It is easy to get turned around on that web of trails without a map. It looks like your daughter was enjoying herself! Thanks for posting this. I love seeing dads take their kids out and sharing the woods and streams with them. That is good memory building there!

Thanks guys.

Jacksterp: summer sausage roasted on a fire is both of our favorites. They were fantastic.

Codger_64: Yeah, Between the hiking, horse, atv, bike and game trails it can get confusing. Luckily the BHT is pretty well blazed. I think the free map from the visitors center is almost useless too. I would recommend buying the much larger and more detailed topo map from one of the outfitters in Fayetteville.

Our nearby local park is quite a bit smaller but is laced with mountain bike trails and fire roads as well as the hiking trails. My first time there they weren't well marked and the maps were copier blowups of a topo map with trails inaccurately penciled in. I made a point of meeting with Mr. Ranger when I returned to the trailhead to critique these problems. It was much better on my next and subsequent trips. I didn't get lost, but it was confusing and I can see how people not used to walking trails might go round and round, walking eighteen miles to cover a eight mile loop.

I miss my kids being that age. I have a three year old granddaughter now that I take canoing. She isn't old enough to hike much and I can't carry her. I do want to get her on a horse this summer. That was the age when I taught her mother to ride.

I used to live in a cabin in the forest not far from Devil's Den.

A great place for hiking, and kids of all ages love the caves. Aside from the Devils Den and other crevice caves, I used to explore Farmers Cave (an actual cavern) for hours at a time.

My little girl loves the caves too. Unfortunately many of them are off limits right now to try and prevent the spread of white nose disease.
