Nice pictures, looks like a great place to have a brew stop and just sit and chill a while. Definitely Poison Ivy, I found some earlier this year that had leaves almost a foot long on a really old Sycamore with the largest leaves I've ever seen on a Sycamore tree. The Poison Ivy is turning red here too now.

That spoon is looking good, and using coals is how I am doing mine...though I do want to get a crooked knife now, I'm wanting to make more plus other things. I'm digging the grind line on that Soldier River, that's really sweet.

Mistwalker, I'll give that a try this week. How many coals did it take to burn it out?

Nice pictures bro. Yep, poison Ivy...

If you want a cheap crook knife you can hit up a place that sells horse related stuff and pick up a 2 dollar hoof knife. Might require a bit of sharpining, but they work purty well. The coal method works nicely, just go slow at it.

Iz makes one hell of a knife. The Soldier River is my favorite of his. It makes a great woods blade. Im on Izs list for a blade, but am awhile out. Not sure if Im gonna give him a design or get a SR....

Looks like you had a great day. Thanks for sharing.

J- That is a good idea. I actually have one somewhere in my tool box from years ago when I was riding. Thanks for the tip!

Heck, man I thought you said you failed at the spoon. If you call that failing you ain't seen the trowels I've carved. I'm not much of a carver.:o
Thanks for the great review, I'm glad you're digging the knife, brother.
God bless,
Iz
p.s. I've had the misfortune of cutting into pi vine in the winter with a chainsaw. I got systemic reaction, ie. it crops up all over you body and is in your blood stream. Lets just say there's place where you absolutely don't want poison ivy to be.:grumpy::barf:

poison ivy that has been dead for a whole year is still super toxic. many people are not allergenic but my brother & i fear this much more than rattlesnakes. rattlesnakes are usually easier to spot but as the ole blues song goes--"late at nite poison ivy comes a creeping"

Spoons made from the wood of large poison ivy vines are known in these parts as "Mother-In-law" Spoons.

Big Mike

You ought to see the logs with divots in them that I call spoons! My wife has made fun of several. So heartless...

That Soldier River looks badass, by the way. Gonna have to get me one of them.

Man I hate poison ivy,oak & sumac.
Ever try to shoot a bow with big ol blisters all over your hands & between the fingers?
It sucks.Didn't get a deer that year.
Thanks for the pics, the spoon's lookin good.
