No matter how many fantastic knives ya get everyone has an old favorite that no matter how much they like the newer ones you seem to always go back to a tried and trusted friend

For me this knife is a 20 year old forged carbon and stag Bagwell bowie. This knife has been my companion on alot of trips and a day to day friend.

It is so familiar to my hand that I gauge how almost all other knives feel to this one.

It has the original Bagwell sheath plus another one that is setup for horizontal carry or to be lashed to a pack any which way even upside down (not that I would ever do that) but it uses rare earth magnets and a retention strap that is very secure. It was made by a gentleman that goes by Rawhide leather.

Along comes my dear friend Paul Long and this was the very first knife I ever sent Paul he made a beautiful sheath for it with a cape buffalo inlay from A Big Bull I shot in the Selous in Tanzania 4 or 5 years ago. The sheath is fantastic and has worn like iron and is still going strong and looking great.

That makes three sheaths. Well I really wanted a full frontal cape Buff sheath from my big Bull so off the knife goes again for it's 4th sheath.

Paul just sent me the pics and what can I say I am more excited about this sheath than any he has done for me and believe me he has done alot for me:D

How about a matching belt to top things off. Haveing Paul do this for me is such an honor that I hope I do not get to fat because I plan on dieing with this knife and leather rig on..

Thanks Pappy Long I love ya.

Paul has instructed me to not send him any more buffalo skin or he is going to kick my ass:D

The buff skin is very soft and amazeingly tough and is a bear to work with maybe Paul can elaborate. It is off my best Bull and he was very old and there is hardly a square inch that does not have a scar. Long days of plowing thru thorns and playing with lions has a tendance to do that. The belt is backed in leather to give it alot of support for carrying a gun and a bowie on the oposite side.

I already have a bunch of different buckle's ordered . One is even a Cape Buff head..

Here ya go

Joe,

Great story. As usual another super sheath from Paul long.

Joe, you're going to need a closet for that bowie! The story of this one continues to grow. Superb thread. Really like the new sheath.

Sheath #3 is a real beauty but from here #4 really looks like home for that blade. On top of that, nothing adds to a piece of gear like a story.
Thanks,
Dave

Both those sheaths from Paul are outstanding (what else should we expect). The new one seems to be the natural mate for the knife. They go together perfectly.

I can't say i've known anyone else that has four sheaths for one knife! Each has it's purpose and it is great that you USE your favorite knife. I can easily see why it is your favorite. That is an exceptionally nice knife. Stag is amongst my favorite materials and that piece is NICE.

I've not seen finer sheaths than those Paul Long makes.

Thanks for posting them Joe.

Peter

Awesome, Joe... I'm beginning to love the shape and style of these knives, and these sheaths really do 'em justice.

What cartridge does your double shoot?

Great knife. Beautiful leather work and great pics. Looks like it was a successful trip

Ok, Joe... That's it! No more awesome pix of Bagwell Bowies & Belles. brother! :grumpy: (;):D) ...Especially in those fine Paul Long sheaths!! I never thought that I'd want a Bagwell custom until you came along and started posting all those sweet knives...

...And then you just had to let me handle this one at BLADE, didn't ya???

:):)

I love the new sheath for the one you posted above in Post #1, my friend, it looks perfect with this Bowie! Fantastic! Thank you for the pix, and the threads detailing both these wonderful knives from Mr. Bagwell, and Mr. Long's beautiful sheaths.:thumbup:

That was one big beast, made for a nice carry rig!

Having held that knife at Blade I can attest to how "right" it feels. It seems to have adapted itself to Joe and sits perfectly in a cross draw on his person.

I'm also diggin' that pack rig. The leather looks a bit shiney in the pic but made from a hunk of that Cape Buffalo......let me shut up, I've got a few knives I want to ask Paul to make sheaths for. Don't need him cursing me over Joe's next buffalo hide order :)

Thanks for the pics and the story Joe! Way cool!

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I hope not to bore you guys with my passion for Paul and Bills work

Matt G it is a .470 nitro. how are you buddy

Jaxx great to see ya here bro.

Thanks again everyone I have just enough Buff skin from this Bull to do a pair of boots. Wonder if I can get Paul to start making boots:D.

I have another back skin that is from another Bull from that trip that is still in the salt . Might have to send it out to get dyed and tanned

There's something really wonderful about the look and feel of cape buff hide... just as you described above, Joe - they don't have easy lives, and the skins tell the tales - worn smooth over time, but with all of the marks that denote what it takes to wear one of these animals down. Thanks again for sharing!

I'm doing well, btw... still owe you a phone call - PM me if there's a better time and I'll bend yer ear a bit.

Great story, Joe, and another fantastic sheath from Paul.
Not sure which one I like better as they're both so very nice.

Now go shoot an elephant or a rhino, maybe wrestle a grizzly or a wild hog.
You are our resident Davey Crockett. :D
