Are digital pace counters that measure the cadence of your step reliable?

Where can I get one of the mechanical clicker counter's, the kind they use at clubs and such to keep track of roughly how many people are in there.

All I can find on ebay are these big monstrosities.

I used to have a small flat rectangular one, and I'd like to get another.

Your pace can be extremely reliable but you must know it under all conditions. Add a pack, wear snowshoes, put on a new set of boots instead of shoes and your pace will vary. I know my 1/10th mile pace count with a 10 lb. load and my Danner Ft. Lewis boots is 92. This is different when I add or subtract weight. It is also different uphill and down.

Your best bet is to find a place to test your stride/pace. Have a measured distance and determine what your 1/10th mile pace is. Once you have this, you can keep track of distance by counting your paces. Learn it uphill and downhill. Learn it at night and during the day and keep notes in a log. Make sure to check it frequently. If you have a set of pace beads, you can be fairly accurate. 9 beads on the bottom and 4 or 5 on top will give you a way to keep track of your mileage. Each 1/10th mile, pull one from the strand down from the bottom 9. Each 10 1/10th miles pull one from the top down and return the bottom 9 to the top of the strand.

I'm not a fan of digital pace counters. They require batteries and could fail. The ticker type you pictured can also be pretty bulky and may fail. Of course, you can lose count of your paces but as long as you keep your focus, you'll be fine.

I have seen similar looking devices for counting baseball managers to count pitches with.

On the downside, you'll be clicking it every pace you take.

Personally, I keep a mental note of pace count. I also made myself a set of "Ranger Beads", which are a cool looking bean counting way of keeping track. For pretty cheap, you can buy a set from BQM, or any number of military supply/ surplus companies.

For low cost (or free if you find the right exercise give away) you can get a cheap digital pedometer. The only problem with those is that they count each time your foot hits the ground. For land nav/ orienteering purposes, it is standard to count paces rather than steps- a pace being each time your left foot hits the ground. That count would be half your step count (divide the pedometer number by 2).

My problem is that I always loose count in my head. Not so much so when I'm alone, but if I have any company it's hopeless.

The big cylindrical shaped metallic ones are all over ebay, but I'm after something smaller.

A long time ago I hade one that was a bit bigger than a match box, around 3"x2"x1/2". I just cant find anything like that now. Do these go by any other names? Maybe I'm just not searching right

I have one like that but plastic but I've never played with it yet:thumbup:

I want to start out behind my house and hike maybe 3 miles to this rock cliff I know using that and the compass and note pad and pencil then reverse directions and come back and see how close I can come to the original place.

I have some orange flagging I can use to mark my original path there and that would give me an idea.

The problem I see is on the real steep places.

That description sounds exactly like something my wife uses for counting stitches. Knitting or some such thing.

I am that old? lol. Have folks memories gotten that bad?:D Only time i ever need a pace count back in the day was at night. During the day, I used to shoot on a fixed point as far away as i could reasonably see and haul butt there.
