You know in the very beginning I really did a lot of research and talked to a lot of people.. and sucked up a lot of info.. (thans again Clay and Chuck ^_^).. and one of the topics a hand was the facination Gollnick had with "errors" in PC customs - and his analogy to it were errors in coins and stamps...

at any rate to customs.. QC seemed very high and mighty there and we sometimes compare BM's current QC to the "glory days" of yesterday.. I have handled a lot of custom spearpoints in my time and all of them had an error.. (HOWEVER - I couldnt identify for sure if they were PC or BM era)

EXCEPT for a custom spearpoint that I picked up that was SURELY custom order.. not mass produced custom grade... it had a full moran edge and te lines were straight as if the grinder's family's VERY LIVES were at stake..

As for production.. a there was a lot of dissing about the 42's QC (from me also) and sacriliege to the "good old BM45 days."

but I just got 4 PC 68's in the mail today.. each one had a diferent bald egrind.. one hasd a leaf shape one looked like "HOW" I envisioned a 68 and one had a clip point and hardly any spine...

it's weird how the 68 is.. I do nt think it is refurbished cause the shape/profile is completely different.. the 69 seems to have better qc.. but then again it's a tanto =p. how can you screw that up.. :D

but yes I just wanted to chime in that caus I'm bored.

HOWEVER despite all this I am still a fan of the old 40 series cause I knwo in the early production these "errors" gave the kife a bit of charm and you know that there was a lot of hand finishing on them.. the later BM45's were just machine churned.

Keep in mind that those 68s were made before Benchmade invested several million dollars in sophisticated blade profiling machines. So, your 68s were all ground out by hand. Some variation is expected.

BTW, my BM custom spearpoint, the one with Ebony inserts, is just perfect.

Oh, I forgot about my 5" spearpoint with the SS skeleton handles. That one is just every so slightly off.

What I find interesting about the spearpoint is how much they vary in width.

I dont know I would sort of like the idea that my knife was hand crafted to an extent. Give it a sort of uniqueness. Oh well I wish I was old enough to have gotten those knives back then.

I would too.. the new 42's have less soul in them :p
btw a Perfect spearpoint is DEFINITELY a find.. I will check at home bt I dont think i ahve more than one good one :(

but then again athat's the thrill ;)

Speaking of spearpoints with perfect grinds and a Moran style edge.....<IMG SRC="http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=667533&a=8822186&p=28684397">;) :D :D

Were most of the stiletto's off a bit as well? I'd imagine that they were, even with the large median in the middle of the blade.

The stiletto didn't have a large median ridge. The knife that had the ridge was a non-cataloged model called a 'Sampson Special'...........Stiletto <IMG SRC="http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=667533&a=11323538&p=39750369"> 'Sampson Special' <IMG SRC="http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=667533&a=13475975&p=33118265">

To help make Sniperboy's point, here's a pic of a not-so perfect stilleto. Notice that the grind lines don't guite match up.
