Pacific Salt as back-up to fixed blade?

Hello, looking for some info. I already edc a Salt 1. I would really like a Pacific Salt as well. How suitable is the Pacific as a back-up to a fixed blade for outdoor use. Normally, I carry my Ritter grip when "afield" in addition to a fixed blade. I really, really love my Ritter. I am also well aware of Spyderco's quality. This is not an issue of BM v.s Spydies. I like both. After doing some food prep today with my salt, I find myself drawn more and more to the ease of maintenance on these knives. Would a Pacific salt stand in for a Ritter grip? Bear in mind, I really like the H-1 steel. I think that the Pacific, larger than the Salt 1 would be a good general cost effective back-up. Opinions??

thanks in advance

my brother has a pe atlantic salt (the sheepsfoot) and he said he wouldn't use another knife on the boat. i'm looking for one now:D

Do you find the size of the Salt 1 to hinder work, or do you use your FB for nearly everything and only break out the folder for tasks like food prep? If you're not relying on the folder for small knife tasks, I'd say go with the Pacific as it would be a better "kitchen" knife.

Not at all. I use my Salt here in the city for a variety of stuff, including food prep. Perhaps I should re-phrase the question. I carry a robust folder (i.e Ritter grip) whenever I'm out of doors. I'd like a sturdy back-up folder for woodcraft, fishing, camping etc that also has the easy maintainability of the Salt 1. Would the Pacific Salt, being larger than the Salt 1, fit the bill? Does this make sense?:o

I think the size really depends more on your preference rather than what is considered ideal by others. I rotate both the Pacific Salt and the Large ritter grip regulary. H1 gives me psychological comfort in knowing that I don't have to care if my blade gets messy or wet. I love the ergos. I feel secure with the lock. IMHO it doesn't get as sharp as S30V and doesn't hold a shaving sharp edge for long, but it stays sharp enough to do the jobs that I need it for so it doesn't really matter to me. If you like the Endura, then go for it.

My question to you is:
Is the Salt 1 on the small side for you?
If so, then I think it'll be a good bet to go ahead and just get the Pacific Salt.

One more thing. If you're worried about the H1 being able to handle the work and want to be safe; why not take the Salt 1 outdoors and keep your Ritter Grip as back up to your back up. And if it works and you need a bigger knife, get the Pacific Salt.

Excellent stuff! Glad you have both knives for comparison! Ok, I see what you mean. Thanks for the info. BTW, did you polish the clip on your Ritter grip? Wave your PS?

Yes and Yes. I actually bought the Ritter Grip like that (the previous owner did it), which I really like. And STR did the Wave modification for me, which I really, really like.

Thanks for the clarification, I was unsure. Ignoramus made a good point about giving the S1 a shot as your folding backup. Also, if you have a knife in the size range of the Pac Salt (Endura), try carrying that to get a feel for what it will be like. I guess I'm just trying to prevent you from buying a knife and not using it. If you will use a large folder and want H-1, the Pac Salt is perfect. Now you just have to decide on edge type :D

Whaaaat?? Prevent me from buying a new knife!! No, I understand. I actually have a Rescue, which is quite similar in size to the PS. I just prefer a plain edge and a point. I carry the Rescue in my truck . . .for um . . .rescuing . . .stuff:) All good points. I guess I just wanted to hear some input from others. Thanks all!
