Hey All,
New to the forum but so far its the best place I've ever been online. Really positive and it seems like its a great group of people around here (I'm sure you would agree!).
Anyways being pretty new to the Spyderco game here is what I have:
Manix 2 XL Black on Black
Endura 4 FFG Grey
Pacific Salt SE Yellow
Today I will do my first review on the Pacific Salt That i recently received. I specifically purchased the PS to use while duck hunting, I would say 90% of the time I get the knives and guns cleaned same day as hunting but everyone once and a while it slips through and it may go a few days before a proper cleaning happens, having a knife that will not rust will be great for this purpose!
I also really liked the idea of a serrated edge, I was not sold on it when I bought it however. But I can assure you that has changed, i will touch more on this later.
ERGONOMICS & Handle
Knife fit great in my hand right out of the box, the ffg is great and I can get a really secure textured grip on the knife, even when it is wet. I enjoy larger blades so this blade size was perfect me, I can see how the Salt 1 would be a better fit some though that prefer a shorter blade length. Like I mentioned above it is extremely light. Even next to the FFG Endura it is very light. I was hesitant of the lack of steel liners and how solid it would feel in the hand. No reason to be worried here, there is a little flex but overall it is very solid and I am not worried at all about the integrity of the handle.
The yellow also was a major selling point, I have a bench made bone collector and the handle is brown. Good luck finding that in the reeds if dropped, nearly impossible!
Price
I paid $62 I believe from Cutlery Shop, I think that is a great price for what you get.
Blade
So far the SE H1 is everything I read and more. It is fantastic, one of the reasons I wanted a full SE is for the sawing ability. I hunt duck from the shore in naturally made blinds. This involves cutting through very thick cattails and reeds and it dulls a plain edge very fast. One trip out with a fresh SV30 factory re-sharpened dulls a blade very quick. The H! held up and is still razor sharp. And I definitely cut more than normal because I really wanted to test out the blade.
It also cut through the duck like it was nothing, the maybe 1/2 inch of plain blade at the tip was more than enough to pierce through the skin. I can't wait to use this knife to fish with also.
I don't know how to sharpen to well so it will be going back to golden for sharpening, no reason for me to ruin a blade or something. This not a downside though I don't mind paying the very cheap price for factory maintenance. Hopefully one day i feel confident enough to do the sharpening myself.
Overall Thoughts
- Perfect knife for anything outdoors that has to do with water, blood etc.
- Super light weight, don't even notice in the pocket.
- Fit well in my wader pockets as pictures below show.
- Easy to see in hard to see environments, I would not hesitate to have this in water environments, rivers etc that you could easily see the bottom if dropped.
- Definitely worth the asking price, I don't see why I would ever go to anything else now.
- I would recommend to anyone.
Below are some pics, One has the knife cutting into the duck, not too bloody, just a warning incase that bothers you.
