I got my pacific salt about a week ago, plain edge, yellow. My intentions were for a lunch knife and I was not dissapointed. I love the blade shape! It reminds me of my santuko. I thought I would not like a pointless knife but the shape is really good for slicing and dicing. I eat pretty healthy and like to cook, a lot of the time I bring whole raw vegatables to work to cut and microwave so I actually needed a lunch knife. I like not having to worry about it rusting and it's easy to keep clean. It's very sharp and performs all of these tasks admirably. It locked up pretty solid when I got it but now has developed a little bit of play which concerns me a little because before that I thought it would be a good edc knife for stuff like fishing and other outdoor uses. It's not noticible unless I cut up something hard like a potatoe. I don't know if it's going to keep getting loose or it's just part of breaking in, my delica and endura don't have any play. It's not very much play so I'm not going to worry about it right now, maybe I expect too much from a folder. The hole is larger than the endura which most people like but I have small hands so I can actually open the endura a little easier but the difference in negligable and with gloves the larger hole would be a benefit.

I also carried it in my waistband when I wasn't using it for lunch. I ordered a serrated version I got for a good price off e-bay. I wouldn't mind having the smaller salt 1 version as well. I havn't gotten it dull yet but I swiped in on the sharpmaker a few times anyway, it stayed sharp. It really takes a good edge, when I first heard of the pacific line of knives I associated the stainless steel with the cheap made in china paring knives that can't be made sharp so it's obvious this is a different animal.

In sum I really like this knife, if it didn't feel a little loose I would like it even more but if it doesn't loosen up any more then it will become my favorite knife!

Very nice review.... I 've been thinking about this one for a while...

BTW, did you know that cooking with a microwake kills more than 80% off all vitamins and proteins... Nuking a brocoli turns it into something as healthy as a fench fries...

Thanks for the review. My Pacific/SE is my favourite knife for hot, humid or rainy weather.

You can't beat the salt series when it comes to hard use, and especially food prep. Is that play up and down or side to side? Both of my salts have some up/down. Thanks for the review!

It has a little play in both areas although the up/down play doesnt' seem to show up if I am holding it by the sides, I think if I touch the lock part it releases enough to create the play. I only noticed it in use when I sliced a potatoe, I don't normally use a folder for potatoe slicing but I wanted to see how the blade went through it.

I can see light on both sides of the blade with the knife open and it feels flexier than my endura. There isn't any light by the endura blade except maybe a patch. The play isn't bad at this point but I hope it doens't get any looser. My other spydies don't have any play.

I've noticed other folks commenting on blade play in the salts, I wonder if it has something to do with the steel?

At any rate, it's not too bad at this point. It would be nice to see a sturdier knife offered in the H1 steel though, similar to the upcoming endura and delica!

I was not aware of that, I only thought overcooking destroyed nutrients, I thought microwaving was supposed to preserve them. I cook vegies as little as possible.
