What would you guys recommend for hunts lasting no longer than 4/5 hours? Need space for water, gps, flashlight, etc; Would want a top of the line model. Thanks!

Do you want/need a backpack, or will a waist pack do?

I have a Macpac Pod waist pack. It's pretty tough (I've scraped it on logs and rocks and haven't ripped it up yet), weighs less than 1/2 pound and has 7-liters/427 cu. in. of capacity. I use mine to carry a 3-liter Platypus water bladder, a PUR Hiker water filter, a first-aid/emergency kit, map, compass and altimeter or GPS, a poncho, some para-cord and a few tent stakes, flashlight, knife, etc. (A GB Mini Hatchet will even fit inside). I got it directly from www.macpac.co.nz and it cost about $27 shipped to my door given the exchange rate when I bought it. I like it a lot. All the ones I saw locally had too many bells and whistles.

Thanks JDM for the info! I really am just looking for a fanny back that is top quality. I have had a couple and the quality is not what I want. I have seen some really nice ones however they are too large for my purposes.

I like a 60's - 70's era hippy-style leather purse, with the leather shoulder strap lengthened. They are very durable and there are lots of 30 year old ones kicking around.

Here is a picture showing mine in use. You can see where I lengthened the strap with a leather belt. I was "hunting" fish that day but it serves me well on day hikes of any kind. This photo shows a side view of the bag, it is roomier than it looks in this picture. Unfortunately this is the only photo I have of it.

Along the same lines you can get a leather possibles bag from a blackpowder supply place or from a leather craftsman.

Ya do know your wearing a kilt in that picture right... :p

I've thought about a camel back, and a small back pack, get the water... and room for whatever else... maybe even more waterpreasure then normal if ya pack right :D

Howard,

I respect the confidence you have in yourself to go out in a skirt, with a hippy purse and a funny hat. :D

one question you need to ask yourself is are you hunting in known territory or somewhere unknown.

I went on a trip to Canada in unknown territory and got lost, A small fanny pack which I had was not enough. Though I made it.....I had a tiny bit of exerience and even less in supplies. Now I would carry a bit more.

I would have some power bars, metal match and poncho at least.

when I go hunting down here I don't take too much because I am not going very far away from known areas.

I'll second this. Heck, where I hunt, you 1/2 day pack consists of a couple of candies, a flask with water in it, and MAYBE a bit of jerky

Your TP, and drag rope go in your game pocket, along with your knife(s) and any spare goodies. I go HEAVY if I carry a waist pouch

Then again - Pick a direction - any direction, and walk in a straight line. You'll hit a road within, oh, 90 minutes walk. Walk SOUTH, and you hit the road in about 10 minutes. Follow the trail, and your "home" in about 15 - 20 minutes. Not much of a pack needed

Some BIG deer in there, and a lot of them. Sure makes it easy when it's a 10 minute drag to the trail, then you walk and get the garden tractor with trailer to bring the deer out, particularly when you and you partner both max out opening morning, and have 4 deer to move

The Macpac module has four lashing points, so you could atttach additional gear on the outside. A small first-quality rucksack from a top backpacking or tactical equipment maker would work fine, too.

You might also check out the "Allen Belt" from www.arktis.co.uk

The Arktis Allen Belt Rig is a configuration similar to the chest rig that is worn around the waist. The belt kit swivels easily to have the pouches optional at front or rear.
