What is the cubic inch capacity of your average Bookbag/Backpack like Students carry? Trying to find a heavy duty pack for day hikes that is close to that size.

Thanks.

1500-3000 cu inch I think. I will heartily recommend the Kelty Redwing series...it comes in three sizes, and you can find last year's model for 60-80 bucks or buy this year's for 90-100. Great pack, comfortable, tough, takes a hydration reservoir, lots of pockets and organization, and tie down patches on top and bottom. I can carry a tent, pad, sleeping bag, and all I need for a few days in/on mine without much trouble.

When I daypack shop, I just browse Sierra Trading Post and pick something. My most recent is a Gregory Shakra, a great pack. It's durable and has a great suspention system with adjustable waist, shoulder, and sternum straps.

It's easy to pack light, but large enough to carry bulkier items for winter dayhikes or work gear. It's 2600 cubic inches, by far the largest pack I've used for dayhiking.

If you're looking for something heavy duty, yet small, take a look at the Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon. It's not a huge pack, but perfect for dayhikes where you won't be sleeping overnight. Anything larger just encourages you to carry more than you really need on a short trip.

Capacity is rated at 1400 cubic inches. I walk 2 miles every weekday with this pack. It's very comfortable when loaded down, and the external bottle pockets are a godsend.

Whoever Maxpedition uses as a model in their pictures must be a very, very little guy. I have some of their stuff (very high quality and practical stuff I might add), and it is much smaller than it appears in their pictures. Make sure you go by, and make you size decision, based on stated dimensions and capacities, and not your impression from the picture.

Sierra Trading Post is a great place to shop.

Get one of the "Aircool" models by Duetra from Germany. The AC in a 20L size is only ~$50 and a little larger then a typical book backpack. It's great for light loads. The Osprey are tougher and twice the price.

Have you looked at actual backpacks? Eastpack (made in USA) has a crazy variety. Also, look into your local TJ maxx; they usually have dozens for 1/2 price.

in '99 I bought my eldest a Vaude daypack for school. Not snazzy but well made. Each time he gets a new one that has a cartoon animal etc I repossess it for travelling. It is still going strong and it has been in aircraft holds, luggage racks, abused at school and general companion for nigh on 6 full years.

This may sound crazy but I have a little day pack made by the Nestle corporation. It's black and the size of a small daypack has plenty of mesh net pockets, zippered pockets on the inside, padded shoulder straps for comfort, drawstring closure for the top. It's made out of heavy cordura and the best part is that the inside is lined to keep water in if you spill something and water outside from getting in. OoohRaa for diaper bags lol.
It's black but does not look very tactical at all. You look like just another dutifull dad.
