Awhile back, I posted a thread asking for advice on saving my pack which had been soaked in motor oil; I mean saturated. Well, it seems beyond help, so I need a new one.:(

What I am looking for is a versatile pack that can work as a day pack for short hikes, commuting, and traveling BUT can also function for overnight hikes and even a BoB. $100 bucks or so is the price range.

Here you go, I've had mine for about 5 years. It's a good pack, especially for the price. Price: $99.95
Kelty MAP 3500 Three Day Assault Pack

Tough to get one pack that does all of that well. Smaller packs will be great for day-to-day, but will not perform as well as a BOB or overnighter. Larger packs will be better for longer trips and heavier loads, but will be shapeless blobs when carrying a few small things on a daily basis. What about trying to get two bags for that $100?

I can tell you what my next bag will be, and it's bigger than what I have now. I'm looking hard at the Kelty Redwing 3100, which is available for about $80 from various resellers.

if you want something like a 3 day pack look into T.H.E. Pack by Spec Ops brand. Otherwise Maxpedition makes a great bag in a variety of sizes and configurations, I just got a Noatak for my day to day travels

Thanks for the suggestions so far - I'll take a look at those.

I should also mention that I prefer top-loaders over panel-loaders. I think the ideal size for me is about 30 liters or so.

Too bad about my ruined pack - it was perfect!

Check out Eagle and/or Blackhawk. I have an older 3 day Blackhawk, non-molle that has served me well, but would not consider it an actual 3 day pack.

I'm more comfortable with a pistol on my side, than in a pack, but there are some E&E packs out there if you want to conceal. Kifaru Koala is a nice sized day pack and you can add some slick pouches to cover additional storage needs. The Kifaru Marauder is about the perfect 3 day pack for me though.

I'm currently looking at the Maxpedition Falcon II. You might have a look at it. It's spot on as far as your price point.

How much weight does it need to carry? What ci range are you looking for? REI makes some pretty good packs in the 30-40liter range hat will fill the bill. The flash 30 and pinnacle 40 come to mind

Yup, that's on my list.

What I really want is a duplicate of my ruined pack.:(
