Evening Jeff...I got back just last night late. Dad took a busted horn 8 pt and other than the two Javelina the son in law took, and the one gobbler I took, thats all the critters that made it to the deepfreeze.

Used the 110, 560, 470, and the 121 all total. The 121 worked as I had anticipated and wanted it to in peeling out the backstrap, and then found how easily it filleted the meat off the ribcage.

Son in law got there without having previously sharpened up his knives so the 560 I was carrying on my belt in a vertical sheath bailed him out, rather than go dig out a sharp 110 from the truck.

He also liked the 470 for quartering, so gave him one. I am just glad he didn't get to use one of the 121's.

An interesting thing about the 121's. I had two with me and when I went to put them back in the sheaths, one wouldn' t go in its sheath. Took a few minutes to figure out that the guard on one is about 1/4 inch smaller than on the other and the sheaths match that width. I will try and get a pic of that difference later. Don't have them in front of me, but I believe they are both three liners with no dots or year codes.

As for deer,,,, saw very few good racks. None that I would take. One of our stands consistently had 10 to 15 deer come in, but again, none worth taking this early in the season. The other stands rarely had more than 2 or 3 deer come in. Definitely less deer at those than in years past. Was a long dry summer out there this year and we wen't able to be there as much to keep the water vats filled. We have tubs scattered around the place to the tune of about 300 gallons total.

We did see several doe without young ones. Those are usually the older barren ones and will be ones we take for table meat on toward the end of the season.

Will get more experience with the 121's, the slightly shorter 105 and the S30V 805SS later on as we take table meat.

Oh yeah,,,Mom fried up a mess of the Javelina backstrap and it was delicious.

I stuck a tidbit in the other thread about the S30V AG110 I used. It was the one that was new last season and that I had put my edge on a few weeks back. Well, I was disappointed in it. So back to the stones for it. It would not slice through the hide in the field dressing part near as easily as I thought it would/or should have. And I had it to where it was shaving.

Will admit I am going to have to go through more learning curve on sharpening S30V. Meanwhile I will carry a few more 420 steel 110's with me.

Glad you got back PackRat. The hunting looks slow everywhere i
talked to hunters. More rain will help.Less 105 temp. days.
Every thing I have is 420 so all preformed well.I did buy a lansky
and playing with it .Getting some good instruction from Joe. H. and wh4f
and others here. The 119 is a little different, to sharpen on it.

One spike, one 8 point, three does, one coyote, three turkeys, one scrub jay, two chippin' sparrows, one possum ,two cottontails, six fox squirrls and one armadillo....no pics camera is in for repairs.
I saw over thirty deer and fifteen turkeys in one day....two of the turkeys were fighting
between a hog wire fence, each one had about an 8 " beard,I got within 15 feet of them before they noticed me and both of them flew instead of running.
I did a lot of watching and no shooting.
I let the guys at camp use my AG 110 and 154CMP 110 .... they loved them.
I was going to use a Hartsook SV30, but I let the younger guys do all of the work....except cleaning the knives.

How big/weight were those bunnys??? (I love rabbit!)... :)

...???...Don't you just jam 'em into the ground a couple times to clean 'em??? :D

The bunnies were about 1 maybe 1 1/2 lbs. each.
The fox squirrls were almost as big as the bunnies.
I like to fry them in wild hog fat....but the piggies were not in our area,
not enough acorns on the ground .

I usually wipe the blade on tree bark and leaves before pokin' it in the dirt for final cleanin'

Boy, EEE sound like you had a good hunt.Did you kill all that behind the old iron bridge? The dam at lake Towakani.Love those 110's.
Way to go.
Jeff:eek: :D

I did not kill them but my buddies and brother did....I was waiting on old mossy horns.....the turkeys were not shot in that area but the ones I saw fighting were there.
About a mile behind the volunteer Fire Dept. building is where the animals are
being taken.:D

I don't blame you EEE, I think the hunting will get better later
in the year. From Thinks giving to Christmas.I hope that you get to go back.
Happy Hunting.
Jeff;)

Hey Larry... No kidding on the 110AG steel???? Just dulled too fast or what?

I don't think I got it as sharp as I thought I did with my first sharpening . Am sure it will be fine after I work on it some more. Don't get me wrong now, it was plenty sharp and I used it. Just wasn't that totally razor sharp I expect when I slide one down the hide making the first sternum to pelvic cut in the gutting process. And it never got any duller while I was using it.

Sounds like a good trip EEE!! I had 5 gobbler come flying off a hill about 3:20 one afternoon and all landed dead under my stand. Now thats something to experience. They are loud when flying. I was surprised because a turk would much rather walk or run. Maybe because it was down hill.
They went straight to one of the water vats and then grazed around there for over an hour. Was the same afternoon that I shot the one in the morning, so let them pass. But was tempted.

All part of the enjoyment of being out there.
