A few weeks back I posted about a fixed blade Field Knife 1082 I'd recently purchased. Orange G-10 handles, very balanced, nice knife. Other than admiring it over and over, my plan is to keep it boxed until hunting season, or possibly use on a camping trip.

Somebody mentioned the PackRat as an interesting folder of similar design. I checked it out on YouTube and it looked pretty cool. My son's 20th is coming up so I figured I might order one for him as he likes assisted openers. I hooked up with Justin @ White Mountain Knives and ordered 2: straight edge for him and partial serrated for me. What a cool knife! Easy to open, well made and designed, seemingly good quality steel, ergonomically balanced. My only problem is that I have to sneak around with it until I give the kid his, because I don't want to ruin the surprise. He'd try to snag mine for sure!

I'm very pleased with the PackRat AND also with White Mountain Knives for good pricing, excellent communication and quick, free shipping.

Anybody else have thoughts on this one?

I am just thinking, why not let him see it and start wanting one, let him snag it a couple of times and then get it back, and then spring the surprise of his very own on his birthday. just a thought.

Thanx, guys. May show him mine in advance, but I think I'll get more of a kick out of keeping it close to the vest for a while.

The PackRat seems like a tough little bugger. I'm not planning on hammering it with a rock or suspending 500 lbs from it to test the lock, but have people been satisfied with the overall performance of these?

So far, I've only heard great things about the packrat. I just haven't had time to pick one up yet.

I've always thought quite a few people overlook the packrat but IMO it's one of Kershaw's more underated models the blade profile is excellent.

Overlooked so much so that is on the chopping block, and will be disco'd for 2012. Not sure there will be many more produced throughout the rest of this year.

Ive been looking to get one as a outdoors folder to complement my fixed blade. For opening bags, slicing fruit, cutting paracord, foodprep and the like. Orange high-vis G-10 is perfect in case its dropped on the forest floor.

Every review ive read or seen has been positive. I think ill be buying one.

No kidding? That's too bad. Hmmmmm, guess I'd better squirrel one or two away. I know finding one in orange is a little harder right now. Thanks for that info.

Funny, I'm loving this blade shape and that of the Field Knife. Both have been described on these forums as "overlooked". Hard to figure out why. The only thing I can think of is the size. Guessing most people want "bigger", dunno. As a working blade I think they're great.

That's a huge bummer! Hard to believe the value of this for EDC has been so overlooked. This is my next Kershaw...

That is a shame. I keep looking at your current knives, and it is one of a few that I keep saying I have to try out sometime. I guess I will definitely have to pick one up then before too long.

I got my orange Packrat today. I like it...its wellbuilt, good-looking and i like the bladeshape. The handle is a hair too short for my hands, but its very ergonomic. Only issue i found, was that there is too litlle of the linerlock exposed, making it hard/slippery to disengage with wet a wet thumb. But at the pricepoint, i cant really complain.

Other than that, its a winner.

You sure picked that one up quickly! Thanks for posting up your insights.

I've been thinking of getting one for a while now. And decided to hurry-up since they have been EOL'd. Ordered an orange one from KershawGuy, and 3 others because his prices are so good! I'm going to have to try to be patient as I'm having them shipped to my nephew in IL and he is forwarding them to me. I don't know why shipping to Canada is a problem, but it is what it is.

Looking forward to putting it to some use...

Dave

Wow, I am glad I saw this thread. I always wanted a Packrat but just never pulled the trigger. There is a sale on the OJ one right now, picked it up for $36 shipped. Thanks for letting us know this knife is being disco'd.

I got an orange one a while back for my 14 year old daughter (it was on sale for around $30 or so), and I like most of the aspects of the knife, but the tooling marks on the liners are pretty visible on ours (and the placement of the flipper to the scales when closed leaves a very tiny amount of metal out there to get hold of - not a huge deal as the tortion bar in this thing is pretty intense - it comes open with the fury).

Neither are big enough issues for me to give it up. Its got a reasonably thick blade (and thick liners), both of which I like in a smaller knife like that. Ours came very sharp and the tip-up/tip-down carry is nice (right-hand only), and the pocket-clip is actually nice looking too. I've got medium-sized hands and it fits me well (its perfect for my daughter).

The PackRat is a favorite of mine. I love the swell on the handle and the liner lock design is a thing of beauty.

I got the same blade a couple days ago- it's very nice. If it was 25% larger it would be out of this world good!
