Padauk finishing

Hi all!

I have a question about working with padauk, or more specifically finishing it. What type of oil would best be used to protect the wood? I am trying to stay away from coating it with polyurethane and have no idea as to whether tung or linseed oil would work since it seems rather dense.

Cheers!

I've used pure tung oil on padauk with great results. It seems like a thirsty wood to me that soaks up oil readily, so I change the way I normally apply oil to wood a bit with padauk.
With most wood I apply a thorough coat of oil, wait half an hour to an hour, then wipe it all off and let it cure for at least 24 hours before the next step.
With padauk, I come back and apply a second coat of oil half an hour or so after applying the first coat, because by then it's typically all been absorbed by the wood. Then come back in another half hour to and hour and wipe off the excess.

Thanks Cole, I'll try this method and see how it works out.

This is my method for treating woods like padauk:

I take a water bottle and cut the top off and fill it 3/4 full with tung oil. I heat the wood with a heat gun just slightly and then drop it in and leave it over night. The next day I take it out and wipe off the excess and let it hang dry. I come back every hour or so and wipe off any oil that seeps out. After no more oil comes out, I let it hang for 3-4 days and then put a coat of wax on it.
