Padded Training Skills For Sparring

What experience(s) have others had with padded stick sparring? At the school where I train, we've tried a couple of different sticks, and we seem to keep breaking everything. Disassembling the broken sticks, we've attempted repairs with results short of positive and ideal. Has anyone found a decent padded stick that either holds up to full speed stick sparring, or is easily repairable?

Thanks,

The first time I saw padded sticks used in our school, they shattered after a couple mintues. I mean shattered. Pieces of PVC went all across the floor. I think those sticks were from AWMA. We have another set of padded sticks that I think has a rattan core. It's better, but pieces of the sleeve that holds the padding tore off. We have them taped with a little duct tape now. I'm not sure where my Guro got these from, but they've been in the school from before I started. The sticks say "Kali Illustrisimo" on them. He might have brought them back from the Philippines...who knows. Now that I think of it...there's another set that is black foam rubber. I don't know what the core is, but the sticks are kind of warped/crooked. These have a lot of duct tape on them to keep the foam on.

K_Williams - Is there a website for those Kali Illustrisimo sticks? Is there some good companies over there? I have a friend who is going diving in the Phillipines in June so I wanna try an talk him into bringing some sticks or something back for me.

What about taking a regular rattan stick and covering the first 12" or so with the round foam insulation used on hot water pipes? If you wrap the stick with double sided tape, then put the foam on, then wrap the whole thing with duct tape it will last for a pretty good while. This method has worked for me in the past.

Ken,

The Lameco Sparring Sticks are excellent. They're a thin rattan stick wrapped in foam and sheathed in a synthetic sheath. The sheath is very durable. A point worth noting is that if you do break the rattan, you can unsew the sheath and replace the rattan. The best part is that the proceeds from the sale go to the late Punong Guru Sulite's family. Hope that helps.

Why spend lots of money when you can make your own? Get thee to the nearest plastics company and buy some lengths of polycarbonate. If you want light...go with the tubing. If you want something heavier..go with the rods. Then swing by the local Home Improvement store and get some foam pipe insulation. Cover it with a layer of duct tape to keep the foam from getting torn. The polycarb WILL NOT BREAK, and you've invested only about $10-12 per stick. Since the polycarb is indestructable, all you have to do is occassionally replace the foam padding. Cheap.

Ropaki,

I don't have a clue as to where the sticks came from or if there's a website for them. My Guro did some training with Tatang Illustrisimo when he was in the Philippines, so maybe he bought them from GM Illustrisimo. That was many years before I started training at the school.

Here's are some companies that sell padded sticks:

I gotta tell you guys the best padded sticks I've ever used come from ASP. The Handle/grip is neoprene and the body of the stick is canvas/cordura holding in closed cell foam padding. I have yet to have one come apart. They work very well even with out one having to wear padding.

This is an old post, so I'm not sure if any of you are still looking for a good padded training stick. I to am looking for a good padded stick. I ran across a product called SMAK-Stiks. They look really good. They didn't seem to be too whippy like some of the other products out their. Anyway, check them out, their are some really kewl videos on the site: http://www.smakstiks.com

I've been using ActionFlex for some time now and have been pretty happy with them. Has anyone had a chance to compare the ActionFlex products to the SmakStiks?

I had a chance to use Smak Sticks this fall during a Kali Test at the Francis Fong Academy in Atlanta, GA. We used them for our sparring rounds, and I was really impressed.
In the past I have used both Lameco and Actionflex sticks, and think that the Smak sticks are a great alternative to both.
They are definitely harder than the actionflex sticks, but not as punishing as the lamecos - you respect the stick when you are hit, but you aren't incapacitated.
The most noticeable difference for me was how well they handled - it feels like you are swinging an unpadded stick.
I also really dug the padded punyo - it opens up a whole realm of possibilities for padded stick sparring which aren't available with either the lameco or the actionflex.
I think that once people discover how great Smaks are they won't want to use anything else.

i totally agree with you alex. I got to test these smaks out a few days or so ago with my instructor and i loved them. although i was on the recieving end most of the time ;). but i'm still here and with no bruses.

i have never tried the lamecos sticks before but i have played with the actionflex ones. i like these smak ones much better. and the padded punyo is awesome. i have even asked my instructor if i can buy a couple for my personal use. i can use it to wack my wife with it if she gets out of line :). just kidding.

i noticed that you are from atlanta. are you the same alex that traines with the sayoc group there? my instructor has told me about you guys. i would love to meet you all someday. just don't kick my butt.

Well, I'm sold. I just sign-ed up to get on the waiting list at http://www.smaksticks.com. They actually emailed me a 20% off coupon. Heck, the Smaks are already 10 bucks cheaper then an actionflex, with the coupon, it's a no brainer. Especially if they are a better product.

--Thanks for all the feedback!

Well I love them. I have had a couple for a few weeks now for testing and they are great. I will be getting a bunch of them for my school. No doubt about it.

I was asked by the manufacturers to do some of the testing for them. Believe me, they are worth the wait. :)

My training group recieved our SMAK-Stiks yesterday and they are definitly a must have. For the first time we were able to go all out from any range. From practicing hand shots, to closing with a stick throw, we never skipped a beat.

I only wish they came in something other then red or black, royal blue would be cool.
