Winchester has some real nice safes.---Be a good investment, especially for some people I know.

I think we have gone over a hundred before, but this isn't a new thread. It's still the same thread continued, just splitting page four off so we don't have to load the first three unless we want to.

And yes, I will send you a picture of my hat.

( In an email I told him and Yvsa about the black Bailey XXXXX beaver cowboy hat I picked up for a fraction of the price because it got cracked. Anyway I repaired the crack and glued snakeskin over it so it wouldnt be noticeable. Anyway, by the time I got through adding all the bells and whistles, it looked like a Charley One Horse (brand name) hat.As I said, if that hat were a car, it would be a pimpmobile. )

Here's the link Yvsa -

Wrong again. Went back and checked. Since day one on bladeforums ( knifeforums not included ) there have been 16 other posts and continued posts that topped 50 responses. None even reached 70 posts. But again, this is the same topic, continued. So we will make it over a hundred!!!!!

So does anyone besides me keep a cold steel Assegai spear around?

What about the Nepalis? Western armies used the polearm as primary weapons and the sword/knife as a secondary defense much like today it's the rifle then the pistol?

What's with spears and arrows in Nepal?

I used to have one of those spears, then I sold it to a friend. I also had a bow and some arrows that were made by an african tribe, I forget the name. Rusty, is you that has the interest in maces? If so I have one you may want to see.

The Japanese did most of their serious wars using spears ( I think they are called Yaris ) . An American, Murray Carter who has been accepted into the makers circle in Japan lives there, and produces all types of cutting pieces, commercial - Kitchen. Tell him what you want and he will make it. Pricing is good, quality ,excellent. Delivery is better than many of his U.S. counter parts. Makes some nice laminated steel that will do some serious cutting.

I believe a spear, would offer good range for home defense.

Funny you mention spears. I had a spear practice for the last two weeks using a Filipino Moro spear and it was fun.

I got to hit a target for two hours straight and could score a kill shot even with one hand. Honestly, I haven't thought about getting one for home defense, I think the gun and khukri/short blades idea is good one, depending on your house of course.

I also have played with maces (Persian and European) before, they hurt immediately. Mult opponents aren't impossible to defend but I would hate to go up against experience strong arm folks.

I have some shurikens that work fairly well. A throwing knife I also have and thats not bad either. If you can find extra large darts, say with a 4" blade or point, they would be the best. ---Maybe the kamis can make something like that.

I used to throw shurikens (throwing stars)also. I had a few four pointed ones that were fairly heavy duty steel, and those would sink 2-3 inches into an oak tree. We used to throw those all the time for fun. Got so we could hit a 4 inch target at 30-40ft pretty regularly, however that's what you might have to be able to do if your intruder is wearing a jacket (especially leather).

The Nepalis did use spears, bows and arrows. I have pix of some old ones on display at the National Museum in the 10,000 file. I'll run across them when I'm looking for something else and will post them.

I have the Assegai spear from Cold Steel. It was a gift from my pal, Ray Chiappelli who owns one of the very few Kancha Kami Specials.

Khukuri FAQ

Speaking of Assegai spears, it just so happens that i do keep one next to my bed. Although it's probably over 100 years old, it is quite sharp and a formidable weapon. I just hope somebody doesn't mistakenly "fall" on it.

Hey Rusty, I got one of those Cold Steel Assegai spears also. I got it for a close range fighter. Also works well for slashing.
Using a spear for home defense would work if you stayed put in one room. Don't go hunting for him because the spear may be too long for inside battles. Wait for the critter to come to you and then stick them.

I wish I could play with some shurikens. They are illegal here in California. For those of you that own CS Assegais, do they hold an edge well? I was sort of thinking about getting one myself.

I do not remember who made the comment about playing with a Moro spear, but I wanted to mention that the politically correct term to use is Muslim Filipino in lieu of Moro. The Muslims in the Philippines consider that term derogatory, as it was given them by their enemies, the Spaniards, during the time of the Spanish colonization in the Philippines. In a way they have claimed that word for themselves, but I think that they would prefer it if that word was used only among themselves. I am not offended, and I am sure that the person who used the term did not mean to offend, but there maybe people out there who are. I hope that this isn't a sore point, as I have always considered the HI forum a valuable medium of instruction where everybody is both willing and eager to learn and to teach.

I've heard the term and never knew that it could be taken as being derogatory. I do not believe any offense was meant and I hope none taken by anyone.

The Cold Steel spear is very soft and will not hold an edge -- at least that's the way mine is. However, it would still be a formidable weapon.

Khukuri FAQ

Just measured the Cold Steel. 37 1/2" oal, add 1/4" in the scabbard. Point to back edge of double edged blade 13 1/2". Total head length including socket, 17 1/2". Shaft behind head to butt, 20".

I look at that spearhead, and then the 4" socket and the diameter of the wood shaft, and I want to take a big, soft, waffle handled rubber grip for a motorcycle that has a raised edge, work it over the socket part... It certainly would make quite a dagger.

Out of curiousity, did the Nepalis ever use spears? Uncle Bill, would you happen to have any pictures of such in your 10 K file of pix?

Harry

Re; spears as home defense weapons

A spear makes an outstanding offensive weapon; it keeps the enemy at arm's length, can be thrown or used close, and when used en masse by ranks of soldiers, it makes an impenetrable hedge; which is why expert fighting men like the Zulus, the Romans and the Vikings preferred the spear to anything else.

For home defense, I don't think it's much use. Unless you live in a very big house with huge rooms, the spear's length makes it very awkward to maneuver. Blocking and parrying with a spear in a confined space would take a lot of skill and practice (if you're not careful, it's very easy to poke your own eye out or cut yourself to the bone trying to block and parry with a spear)Furthermore, the spear gives you only one option, a kill. The priority in home defense is to stop the intruder from harming you, preferably without killing him, because of the legal difficulties...

As noted before in this thread, home defense simply isn't an option for me; but if it was, I'd use a very old and simple but exceptioanlly effective weapon, the short 5' quarterstaff (what the Japanese call a 'jo') With a little practise you can quickly learn to block most any attack with an edged weapon, and you stand a better chance than most of being able to disarm and neutralise a man with a gun. A sharp blow from a staff (particularly fitted with lead-weighted ends and steel ferrules, as the practise was hundreds of years ago) will end a fight immediately, knocking the other guy out, breaking his collar-bone or elbow joint etc, but is fairly unlikely to kill him unless you accidentally connect with a particularly vulnerable spot. Best of all, the staff is maneuverable in confined spaces; anywhere you can throw a punch, you can fight with a staff.

Finally; when the Feds or the BATF raid your place for weapons and take away all your kitchen knives and baseball bats, they won't bother with the staff - just stick a broom or mop head on one end and leave it standing in the corner of the room...
