Hi All,

I just wanted to inquire with the SAK carrying/collecting brothers and sisters down under:

I'm a Canadian who is moving to South Australia in a couple of months and was wondering if it would be frowned upon to carry a SAK on me while there (only for utility and preparedness purposes... of course). I always carry a flashlight/torch with me along with a SAK (usually a Spartan, Compact, Cadet or Pioneer). I was just wondering if I should rethink bringing multiple models as I like rotating them from day to day and opt to just bring one along with me as I won't be able to carry due to possible knife law complications.

Hope to hear your thought/experiences on the matter.

Thanks,
A

Actually, I've done the same thing, although Calgary to Queensland. SAKs are specifially allowed for carry due to "obvious utility purposes" and so are normal MTs. the question gets a bit muddy with one-hand openers, but even then they are still okay if you have a good reason, or where in the bush. So go ahead, you'll be fine (as long as you are not clubbing or whatever)
One thing to look into though, just for your own info if you are traveling, each state here has different carry regulations, and the import guidelines are on top of that. But if you are planning on sticking to standard SAKs you'll be fine. I've left all my other folders in Canada, and only carry MTs and SAKs now.
One last reccomendation. SAKs here cost a mint, for some reason they are just insane for price, so I would bring more than one, so that you don't find yourself needing to buy one here if the worst happens. Since you sound like you have a few, then its no problem.

Thanks for your response gadgetgeek :) I do intend to take a few (maybe 4 or 5) and they are traditional non-locking, tablet shaped SAKs. I try to make it a point to have some tools on me in case the need arises and not having at least a SAK when you find yourself needing one of its handy tools would justy be a shame. I do own a few folders from the popular brands (ie Spyderco, Benchmade...etc) but I switched to collecting SAKs when I knew I was moving down under. Wouldn't want to break any laws when entering a new country.

Thanks again for the input!

Like I said, I ended up in the same boat. Just so you know, its not the locks that are the problem, its jut the one-hand opener may be classed under the "tactical Feature" rule. Anyway, without editorializing, you would also be fine with the locking 111mms if you wanted a bigger one. Thankfully because SAKs and MTs are specifically mentioned, you don't need a reason, where as one can carry nearly anything if fishing, or on a picnic or whatever, and obviously for work if it makes sense then its okay. But not having to have a reason is great. I tend to keep anything else I'm carrying as plausible as possible.
Is it a permanent move, or are you doing the backpack thing? I made the mistake of assuming I'd get nice weather when I visited SA in winter. Think Victoria in fall, cool and wet. not so fun with nothing warmer than long sleeve cotton shirts!
If you haven't already, head over to australianbladeforums and say howdy. Lots of good info there on state specific laws, links and other stuff.

I've visited australianbladeforums, but haven't had the chance to sign up. I'll probably get on that sometime soon :) Thanks for the weather warning... I was told it does get a bit chilly in the winter time. I'm doing the working holiday thing so it's temporary for now. It's nice to know though that I don't have to leave my SAKs behind :)

not so much that its cold, just wet and humid. A tip with the working holiday, check the conditions on the renewal, you might need to do some farm work to be allowed to renew, and you might want to, if you decide to stay longer. I made that mistake, and then had to wait for my temp-residence to come in before we moved back here.

It's a shame your not coming to the " real " Australia .

Queensland

We don't allow Winter to exist up here :)
