Paid membership.....Why not?

I joined a year ago but really only started being active last month. Since joining I have gotten a ton of valuable info, bought a cool custom knife from one of the makers here and just basically really enjoy all the posts.

So I was contemplating another knife purchase last night when it hit me that I should just spend the $25 and join as a Gold Member. Why don't more people join? I mean, I see people showing off their $100's of dollar knives yet have been non paying members for years.

So why don't more people join?

Good point.

Paying members help ensure the sight will be maintained and around for a long time!

It's the "free stuff" mentality. Why pay for something that's free. Of course, these same people would complain bitterly if Blade Forums went away.

Gold is good, Platinum is great! Once you buy that shine, you'll never go back!!!

Guess it's for the free stuff, mainly.

Lotsa people order pizza but not everyone tips. To those who do, thanks, you helped me support bladeforums.

i found out a lot of trolls dont buy a membership so they wont have anything to loose if they get banned.

Like many things in life (and not just from a monetary perspective), the few pay for the many. I'm just thankful we the generous among us.

now now I joined as a basic member and when I saw that this was a very good site and not a flim flam place I went out and became a goldmember.

What irritates me are the vendors and knifemakers that don't have the appropriate membership. I know from conversations with other members that it pisses off more than just me. If you're using this forum to profit at least get the right membership!!

Thanks for starting this thread!!

I was a paid member. My subscription lapsed. I'm in a custody battle for my kids and need every penny to get them. Once it's done I will be a paid member again.

Orrr...there are some of us who just plain don't have the cash at the moment.

HELL YEA I can't say it better my self. if they find these people out then kick them where it hurts and the throw them the heck of this site and dont come back any more jack.

I free-loaded for a long time but it felt damn good to get my gold badge.
That secret magical pirate-heaven alone is worth the subscription price.
;)

I figured that the info is valuable, and there are some great people to interact with. Even though I've only a basic membership, hey $10 is something. If I'm still posting around in a few months, then why not crank it up a notch? It's a good forum.

You don't have a way to find ten dollars?

I don't need anyone's opinion/advice on how to spend money I earn, codger. Not that it is any of your concern, but I bought a $4 tool set to repair a knife that I received from a Pay it Forward thread so I could actually use it. A thread I started by giving other forumites my things, that I paid for, for free. For your further information, no I don't have ten bucks to spend on something I don't really use on a regular basis because I am saving as much cash as humanly possible so I can live/work in El Salvador helping homeless people. Not that any of this is any of your business or concern, of course. Copy?

Stay in America and help our homeless, then you should be able to afford a basic membership.:D

I've been gold, platinum, and then orange for the last couple years (under the shiny red crayon). BFC is the largest knife information repository in the world, and I'm more than happy to support that. I'll probably add a dealer membership that I'll likely never use when I re-up my orange, just to support the site.

That said, I know what it's like to not be able to rub two pennies together and understand completely when someone just doesn't have the means to spend even $10 but still wants to participate in topics on a subject that they're passionate about. The collective base of information and the diversity of membership is what makes BFC what it is. There's a wealth of knowledge here that just wouldn't be without contributions from paying members and registered users alike.

If someone has the means to support the site and it's helped and entertained them, then they should, but let's not be presumptuous and try to guilt everyone into it. Even if they have the means and decide not to contribute, that's still their call. The forum is set up so that paying for a membership has privileges, but the information is always open and free to everyone. If you need proof that that's the way Spark wants it, just look at the crap he put up with just so that everyone was able to search again.
